Both look awesome!!
Thanks gals for the suggestions. Will let you know how it goes.
UPC result in 1.0 down from the last two times of 1.7 That is progress!
Cheers!
hugs
Go Molly, Go! Always good to see numbers going down. :)
Let me know how Molly tolerates the paws if you order them please. I might get them for Bella.
Go Molly!
Good news! YAY!!!
Aw Sharlene, that's great news, for sure! You've been working so hard to help Molly; you two girls definitely deserve this reward! :)
I'm very happy with it, at one point it was over 2.0 and then stuck at 1.7 for a long time. She is on 5mg am and 5mg pm on benazepril to get it there, but it might also have to do with bringing the cortisol down and the BP meds too. It all seems to be working in concert. One goes hay wire and they all do. Arggghh
I would love for her to be settled in the next week, but doubt that will happen. I'm going to be going away for a week this month and it's driving me nuts worrying about her and I haven't even left yet .
Hubby surprised me on Christmas Eve, by saying we are going with friends to Barbados for a week. He has already booked it and it's settled, so while I'm thrilled to get out of the cold for a week, I'm a basket case trying to get the little miss settled.
Okay, so I have a thing of pawz, it says x-small for shih tzu. Really do they fit that tight? looks very small. Not sure how it will work but we'll try it tonight and see.
I have to come up with some solution as this afternoons walk was a disaster. :(
hugs
Yes, The Pawz do stretch and fit tight, so they can't pull them off. The x-small were too tight for Buddy and he weighed 16 pounds. We ended up going with the next larger size. They stayed on, but they weren't so horribly tight.;) If they don't fit, exchange them. Yes, I realize that your weather is horrible, so that's easier said than done.
We had 80F weather today. That's 26.7C. I bet you really wanted to hear that! Mean!!!:D:D
X-small, fits a shih tzu, does Not fit molly. Can't even get one of them on her. Back to the store tomorrow. In the mean time, no sure Where I put those ones I bought her years ago that she refused to wear. hmmm
We used the blue (medium) Paws for Hamish, who was around 17lbs. I think he would have been OK with the red (small) ones but they were out of stock when we went to the store to try them.
They were a bit big on his feet but were about right (i.e. not too tight) on his ankles.
The lady in the store did insist on trying the orange (x-small) ones on him and they were seriously tight - he was very unimpressed when she tried to take them off, as they clung to his fur.
-23C feeling like -36C for us in the morning
The red/small Pawz ended up fitting Buddy just right. ;) The extra small (orange) were a definite no. Molly is not too big. The dang things are too small!
Holy cow that is cold! That is what our Wed is suppose to be like. We're in the wind chills of -25c now and that's too bloody cold for me and molly.
I'm going to try the small and if that doesn't work, move up to med I guess.
I tried looking everywhere i could think of and couldn't find the booties. I might have given them away. It was quite a few years ago and she never wore them outside (have to stand to be able to go outside in them and she would just lay down) So back to the store tomorrow. Darn if we aren't in for more snow on Thursday night too. I think maybe a bit tomorrow too. I can live with cold and dry pavement but molly cannot do this salt stuff on her paws.
Our x-small was black. :( I saw she had a box of small red though, so that is what I'll try to get tomorrow
Great news about the urine protein! Go Molly, GO! and nice work, Mom.
The cold... holy cow. I hope you can get Molly's boots and you don't have to stay out in that any longer that necessary. Having always lived in NC, I can't imagine that kind of cold. Y'all snuggle and stay warm!
Holy Heck, how are you supposed to get the dog's paw through the tiny opening of the PAWZ bootie, no matter the size???? I got the large ones for Peg yesterday, and they look like they ought to be the right size if I could ever get them on, but there is NO WAY her big fat paw is gonna make it through that opening :(. I was really hoping these would work (especially cuz the large ones are purple, and that matches her collar and also her bandage tape -- the girl would be stylin' :)). But I'm thinking I'm striking out on these. Phooey, the idea seems so good otherwise...
I think they are supposed to be rather tight, but should stretch over the paw. I remember a friend who put them on her pugs... she called them paw condoms, lol.
Have you seen this http://pawzdogboots.com/size-chart/?
When we got the mediums for Hamish they were a good fit, but definitely not tight, around his ankles and a bit large on the foot. I had planned to make them smaller with duck tape (someone told me to patch them with duck tape if they wore through which was great advice as it meant one pack lasted an entire winter) but he didn't seem too worried by the extra space.
Well it is quite the production to get it on her, but I tried a size small on to see if it would fit and it did.
Marianne, whatever size you Think will fit and should, go up one, otherwise it's a tight stretch and impossible to get on.
I haven't tried all 4 on her yet or taking her outside. When I put the one on her she held the paw up and tried to walk on 3 legs like she was dying or something, but she finally put it down, and went running up her steps to the window seat using all 4 feet, so I think this might work out, if I can just get them on her. After I took it off, she is running and hiding from me every time I call her, so she must think I'm torturing her. (she'll get over it, she thinks the same thing about being brushed)
hugs
Now that's a visual!:D:D:D
The are designed to fit tight around the ankle so they stay on. They should not be so tight as to cut off circulation.:eek::eek: They look very small, but do expand significantly. I wouldn't give up on them as of yet Marianne because they are waterproof and will keep Peg's sore foot clean and dry. You might need to go up a size.;)
That's encouraging Sharlene.:p If Miss Molly can run in one, she can run in four. ;) Great Job!
Update! They are so worth it for outside in the snow and salt. Once I convinced Molly that I had not in fact cut her feet off from her legs and that they still worked it was easy peasy. She was going lickty split down the sidewalk, through the snow, peeing and pooping where ever she wanted with no problems what so ever. She even discovered that she can run and jump, still do the back kick after a potty and the world is still her oyster.
Marianne, it's worth getting a size that will fit around the ankles. The body around the paw is a bit loose but around the ankle fits perfectly and I just pulled them off when I came in the house.
One thing I did notice is that when they are wet and you come in, get them off right away as they WILL go sliding on the tile or wood floors when the booties are wet.
SUCCESS is wonderful!
hugs all and Thank you!
Marianne I forgot I was going to tell you I saw a lab today in them, they were green.
Pics or video please. I'm sure they will be much cuter then what I'm imagining.
I'm with Judi! LOL, my visual is waaay too funny!
Well I got a picture. Gives new meaning to the phrase "paws up" LOL
http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/albu...pictureid=7387
She doesn't seem to mind them once I get them on her now. Once you know your feet are still there and work the same, and your paws won't freeze when you go outside, it's a whole different story I guess.
Thank you so much for sharing that photo Sharlene! It is absolutely adorable!:p Every time "paws up" is mentioned, i'm going to see that picture of our little muffin.:p:p
It's hilarious! Some mentioned condoms and now I cannot get the thought out my mind! haha... red is her colour though and any photo of Molly is adorable and so so pleased they are keeping her little pretty paws protected! x
For the first time ever, I notice that molly now shivers when at rest, or standing or sitting, just shivers an awful lot and her hair while still growing, is getting thin. Maybe she is feeling the cold as her hair seems thinner, but she shouldn't be shivering in the house with the heat on and hasn't been outside for hours.
It's like with her cortisol lower she now shows symptoms she never did before.
She is to have an ACTH test next week. We haven't increased her dosage at all as I wanted to see if it would continue to come down even after 30 days.
I must say, I don't like this. No attitude change, but other things and particularly the new shivering are concerning to me.
She'll have a cbc done the week of the Jan 26.
Oh pooh, I don't like the shivering either! I know we've had a lot of shivering episodes reported here through the years, and darned if we could just make better sense of them. I've repeated this many times, but my Barkis started having shivers (or tremors as I started calling them because it was obvious he was not cold) shortly before he was diagnosed with Cushing's. They got dramatically worse after he started on trilostane, but then stopped entirely after 2-3 months on the drug. Such a puzzle we could never figure out.
Sharlene, remind us of Molly's most recent ACTH. It is possible that these new problems (hair thinning, shivers) are related to the treatment. But the reverse is also possible, at least with the thinning coat -- that her cortisol is still hanging up there high enough that she is finally exhibiting a standard external Cush symptom.
It is just very hard to know. But I understand why all of this is upsetting, regardless of cause. The tremoring always really bothered me (actually, far more than it bothered Barkis because he basically ignored it!).
Marianne, here are our last few test results.
ACTH Oct 17, 2014
Pre 74 nmol 2.68ug
1hr 858 nmol 31.09ug
2hr 1024 nmol 37.11ug
ACTH Nov 07, 2014
Pre 102 nmol 3.69ug
1hr 582 nmol 21.09ug
2 hr 608 nmol 22.03ug
ACTH Nov 26, 2014
Pre < 27.6 nmol 1.003ug
4 hr 339 nmol 12.28 ug
8 hr 408 nmol 14.78 ug
I elected to Not increase the trilostane at that point and wait to do a test in January to see where she is at. My specialist was away over the holidays and it seemed smarter to just not do anything and see where it went, plus I didn't want an increase with that low pre cortisol reading. It did as they tell us it can, continue to decrease at the 30 day testing. I'm worried that it has continued to decrease. What is very strange is that the pre would be so low with the posts still being high, but then molly has always been the abnormal case study for cushings.
Yep, your rationale for holding off an increase totally made sense to me. But I had forgotten about that 1.0 pre reading. That does seem bizzaro given the post of over 14. Did you IMS consider contacting Dechra about that because it seems so strange? It will certainly be interesting to see what the January results turn out to be!
Didn't seem concerned about the pre number at all, and was concentrating on the post number. They want the post to be around 250 nmol I think they said. These tests all used the same lab, IDEXX, and we want to make sure to use that for all acth testing going forward to so we don't get any lab differentials to deal with or have to factor in.
I'm thinking, hmm, either the pre number is really bothering her now, or kidney/liver would cause the tremors. It will be one of those, what changes have you noted conversations for sure.
During the last winter that Hamish was with us his fur was a bit thinner and I noticed he shivered a couple of times so I put a little sweater on him and he was absolutely fine - no more shivering. I think it was just the thinner fur as often dogs coats are thicker in winter.
Molly's picture is precious! The boots are adorable, but I must say that with my crappy eyesight they look like little boxing gloves. My first thought was "MOLLY-ALI".
I'm sorry to hear about the shaking. Buttons, my noncush pup shakes and it is very disturbing. I wonder sometimes if it could be a drop in blood sugar or something. Otherwise she is perfectly fine and has no health issues that I am aware of.
I know how worried you are about her. Hopefully this will pass as Barkis' did.
Hi Sharlene,
Just doing a bit of catch-up here on the forum. I am thrilled with Molly's last UPC!! I would give my left arm to have Jasper's be that low! Great job, so happy for you. Is she still doing the shivering? I hope that isn't continuing.
OMG, the pic of Molly in her Pawz is adorable! We use the red ones here also, and Jasper lays on his back just like Molly for me to put them on. So cute. They're a little big on his feet but not too bad, I don't think I could get the next smaller size on him. I've been using the same ones for Shelby, but they're a bit bigger on her. But so far so good, they have stayed on when she is out in the yard. I'm not sure how well they would stay on if we were out walking around the neighborhood, though. But I don't want to buy another whole box in a different size, so we're going to see if we can make it work for this winter.
I hope you and the little Muffin are doing well and keeping warm.
Hugs,
Tina and Jasper xo
Hey Sharlene, Just wanted you to know that even though I don't post much here that I am always reading about our dear Molly and wishing the best for you both. ;)
Love and hugs, Lori
Hi Sharlene,
So sorry to read that our little's muffin's eyes have aged two years in two months. :o Is she still able to see well enough to get around safely?
On the upside, reading that the supplements are helping to keep her legs pain free and that she's wearing her Pawz outside, is really good news. She looked adorable in her bootie photo.:p
Molly is very lucky that you're on her team. Go Molly, go!
Big hugs,
Did I miss a post about Molly's eyes?
A www, and here I was going to ask about what size paws I should buy Koko and tell you road trip to Vegas,
Hugs Sharlene to you and sweet, pretty little Molly.
I had posted that on Marianne's thread, but the eye situation happened in August.
She had normal BP, her eyes were clear, UPC okay, we did three to try and determine if she had the protein loss, and couldn't get 3 consistently bad. Then she boarded in August for a weekend or something and my vet said, what has happened, molly's eyes have aged 2 years in 2 months. That was when I made the appt with the doggy ophamologist and her specialist in September. Verdict, high BP caused by cortisol and protein losing kidney disease has caused retinal bleeds which has caused loss of focal point sight.
Yes she gets around okay, she can still see shadows, etc, but she doesn't recognize us if we are outside the window, and she doesn't see things close up very well. She knows her house and her steps on the staircase and maneuvers fine. If she can't see something well and is nervous, she will bark and we'll come and tap for her so she knows where things are.
We play the throw the kibble game so I can keep track of how she is doing and she loves that. She doesn't bump into anything and still flies up and over the one step to the front door like a pro. I'd say she is doing very well for everything she has going on these days.
The back legs luxating worry me quite a bit, but as long as she isn't in any pain I guess she is doing okay. They have gotten worse though. No surgery option for her as they feel she is high risk to throw a clot. So, we do what we can with what we have and molly is still our diva molly. Maybe even a bit more so. :)
We have an appt tomorrow for a recheck on ACTH and the ionized calcium. Please lord, let that be below the high cut off. Don't think I'd handle it well if it is out of sorts again. Hoping the ACTH is good too, I don't want to raise the dosage with that low pre number and the shivers she has started to exhibit in the last couple weeks.
Just hanging in there :)
Vegas!! wooot woot.
Koko is about molly's size, I went with the red size small. It's tricky at first to get them on, but once they get use to them, tis a wonder.
hugs girls
Thanks for explaining, I knew the original eye issues, I thought they worsened now and had missed the post. Zoe could not see well either but got around ok, I just had to watch her closely outside.
I'll hope for a good recheck for Molly so you can both relax. Glad her Upc is down that is good news. I had read that earlier. I may not always write but I always read your updates.
Thanks for the tip for Koko. We may try them out. We have not been able to walk even in the yard for two weeks, his paws freeze in this awful cold.
