Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
i have heard water therapy is good, massage, and air mattress play. water therapy and air mattress is excerise that offers no impact so strength can still be built and massage helps circulation to promote healing. also combined can help them stay stretched and fluid.
IF ever needed, there is a man who builds little carts for babies to zoom zoom zoom around it. He donates them to animals who need them.

Hi Julie
So sorry to read about Hannahs sore back. I posted on Addy's thread some info about the tramadol. I saw your post there before this one! Hope it helps and she is feeling perkier soon!

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Hi Julie,
My intenet connection keeps going out I could not get on line last night to answer your question and cant answer from my phone.
Zoe is 17 pounds. When I gave her as much Tramadol as your prescription for Hannah, she was knocked out.
I can only give 1/4 tablet of a 50mg pill twice a day to Zoe maximum.
I think try that first with Hannah and see how she does.

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Thanks everyone for thinking of us.
Thanks, Lori, Trish, and Addy for the info. on Tramadol. I knew you all talked about using a very low dose-and often times lower than the vet says-so I wanted to start low too.
Trish, I read the same info. on petmeds, which is why I was a little worried about even the 1/4 pill dose, because at the low end, Hannah would only get 5.4 mg. I ended up splitting one chunk of 1/4 pill in half, so she got about 1/8 of a pill last night (hard to make it exact) and she slept the entire night (unusual for her, so I'm sure the drug was the reason). So for now, I feel like the 1/8 is okay. I'm just relieved she didn't show any issues.
I'm up early waiting to see how she is. If she has her morning leg issues I would like to be here to see if it straightens out. My anxiety is high right now, but I'm focusing on staying calm for her and letting her get up slowly. I also have to decide if I give another Tramadol this morning. The vet said to maybe just start at night, but that I could certainly go to twice a day as well.
I'll let you know how she is later today.

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Julie, I was talking to a friend tonight. She has been on Tramadol herself, she got it in a drops format, 5 drops = 12.5mg.
I have emailed my vet to see if I can use that, as she said I could have it as she is not using it anymore. I also called the pharmacist at the hospital as I am always a bit leery about opening capsules as that is often not safe to do. But we do not get it in pill format here. So I have to quarter the powder in a capsule which is pretty difficult to do accurately. He said it was ok to do it that way if that was all I had, safe for Flynn if he got a wee bit extra or less in a dose. So I imagine Hannah will be fine as well. But I like the drops idea as I could put it on his food. He is such a good boy with taking pills, I just wrap them in a piece of his meat, but he could taste the tramadol powder and did not seem to like it, but his love of meat made him swallow it!! I do not want to put him off taking pills though.
Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Hi Julie, checking in with you to see how Hannah does this morning. I really am hoping that this is something that is going to clear up with just a bit of rest and no overuse. Back problems are so hard on dogs and humans.

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
I'm still confused about what's going on with Hannah. I took a video of her walking yesterday morning and sent it to both vet offices (my primary one and the one that does the acupuncture/laser) and they both felt it was neurologic. They just don't know why she pulls out of it as the day goes on.
They don't want to start steroids at this point because of the possible ulcer and because we don't really know what's going on. As of now, if she gets worse, they may start steroids (although they both say it's controversial as to whether or not it helps). If we can get through the ulcer treatment (a couple more weeks) and she seems okay, we will probably start steroids anyway, to see if it helps with her allergies.
She is scheduled for acupuncture again next Thurs. morning. I won't be able to go, so my parents will have to. I feel bad because it isn't too fun to watch her go through the needle insertion, and I know my mom hates it, but it has helped her. She did pretty well on Thurs.
The possible good news is that this morning she didn't have any horrible issues. Just seemed a little awkward and maybe a little painful. There is uncertainty about if we rest her or keep her moving, but I'm going to try resting her for the most part, assuming it is a disc problem.

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
We'll just take the possible good news and go with it:):):)
Maybe resting is better for her. I know Zoe is better since I went back to walking one day on, one day off. I think I was pushing her too fast.
One of our work dogs, the South African mastiff, has pretty bad seasonal allegories that come on fast and he rips up his face scratching in a weekend. My boss gives him a low dose of prednisone which usually takes care of it right away as long as he does not let it go too long before treating. His brother-in-law is a vet and supervises the dose, making sure it is always the lowest dose possible and it is only given for the season. I have always been concerned about it but they felt they had no other options, they tried numerous things, nothing helped him and he would really suffer, even his ears would get boiling hot.
sending you love and hugs

Hi Julie,
How is Hannah doing? Is the leg getting any better? Hope the acupuncture is helping here and that everything else is okay. Hope Izzy is doing okay too.
Just wanted to check in on you
