Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Hi Julie,
That vet is just wonderful!!! I wish she was near here. I'd use her in a heartbeat too!
Poor little Hannah, I'm sure her tummy says she is hungry and then her mouth says Ouch! :(
Maybe the hamburger will work in small little portions. Too much could upset her tummy too and don't want her to vomit. I hope she feels better soon.

I wonder if Hannah would eat baby food? Sending healing and loving hugs, Lori
Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Some good news:
Hannah ate a little canned food off my finger (with vigor), and took a hydroxyzine in canned food. We went for a very short walk (a couple of houses) and she was eager to go and trotted. She went potty by the fire hydrant and begged for a little treat when we got home (a tiny dab of canned food). She also got another drink. I'm feeling much better.
The vet (herself!) called this afternoon to check on her. She reminded me that she probably won't poop for a couple of days, and that the side effect of the med can be constipation. That can be a problem for Hannah too, but hopefully with all the wet food it will be better.
She said there was a root tip right in the front of Hannah's mouth, so that could be why she was so hesitant to eat earlier. She also said that she should continue to improve, but there may be more setbacks, like when she gets some food right in one of the sore spots. She is so good! I told her I've been bragging about her to everyone, and that I'd recommend anyone with doggy dental issues to go see her. :D She was thrilled. She said she'd be checking on us again soon.
My mom volunteered to come over to watch my girls for a couple of hours so Matt and I can go run a few errands and grab a quick dinner. (I knew he would not be happy if I said we had to be confined to the house the whole weekend). I'm lucky my mom is so close and so helpful! She loves my little Hannah too, since I still lived there when she was adopted.
Anyway, keep your fingers crossed that the improvement continues! We are supposed to get freezing rain, rain, and snow the next 48 hours, so that stinks big time! Hannah already has trouble and now she'll be drugged and trying to deal with it. I sure hope it's not too bad.

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
Hi Julie,
What great news about Hannah and your continued wondrous vet. :) I'm soooo jealous!!! LOL Actually I am very glad that Hannah and you had a great vet to do this kind of surgery. It's really reassuring to know that there are some pretty awesome vets out there and we just have to find them. She's pretty inspiring.
That is so good that Hannah is eating a bit and acting happy too. Love that mom of yours! Babysitting her grandpups is very cool thing. :)
Gosh I hope you don't get freezing rain. :( I'd much rather have snow than that icy stuff any time.
Enjoy your quality time with Matt. That will be a nice stress relief for you both you to have a tiny break.
hugs,
Sharlene and Molly Muffin

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
I think we all want Hannah's vet!!! She sounds super wonderful! I was wondering if you would be allowed to put any of that anaesthetic gel on her gums to help with pain, maybe something you could ask next time she calls. Glad she is eating a bit, they must wonder what the heck hits them eh... off she goes to sleep and wakes up with a mouthful of pain! But it is going to be sooo worth it in the long run!
I love that visual of the fire hydrant, we do not have them in my country and I remember growing up seeing American movies of dogs peeing by them or else the water spraying out and and kids playing in it on hot hot days... it just seems so ummm American I guess :D:D I just know Flynn would love a fire hydrant to pee on!
Hope you had a nice relaxing evening out, you deserve it Super Mom!

LOL at Trish saying Flynnie would love a fire hydrant to pee on:D
Hope you had a nice break with dinner and Hannah is feeling a bit better this morning. You are very lucky to have a great babysitter of a mom:):):):)

Re: 14 year-old Shih Tzu With Recent Cushing's Diagnosis
My molly loves a fire hydrant too. I'm not sure that she remembers she is a girl sometimes, because that dog cannot pass a good hydrant by. :) So, what is Hannah's position on hydrants, pee worthy or pass by?
I hope she is still doing good and her gums continue to heal nicely.

How are you girls this morning? I hope Hannah's appetite is coming back and she is feeling a bit less pain today.
