Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Pleased to hear you are feeling better today.
So sorry to hear about the passing of your hubby's friend's dad - he sounded like a great guy and will be very much missed.
I'm definitely not an expert on dog's eyesight, but one thing we noticed with Hamish was that sometimes wouldn't see something which was right under his nose (but would find it by sniffing), yet he could see something that was really far away, and we've seen the same occasionally with Henry. I remember reading somewhere that sporting dogs are usually far sighted, allowing them to spot prey, so I assume it's possible for other dogs to be near sighted, just like humans.
Hubby got lots of brownie points for getting the skates - I organised it all from here by tracing my feet, calling the store, etc. but it was worth it because I saved around 40%. I had to get them after the two foot injuries earlier this year :(

Rofl. Message i meant. Hehehe. I was like what Is she talking about! You know me and the autocorrect thing. It is a disaster.
Now have been informed we have some Chinese Canadian art dance tv show gala thing to go to this Sunday. Totally mystified of what that is or what one wears to such a thing. It certainly isn't dull around here this month.
Off to fix dinner.

Wow what a legacy your friend's Dad has left for the world, his family must be very proud of him Sharlene. Still never easy losing anyone so my condolences to them and to your family too.
So pleased Molly is doing good, you know Flynn can happily trot up steps but the one into the house he is notoriously slow at getting in, dunno what is up with that either. Sometimes he boings over, others lifts up one leg at a time, when that happens I think his arthritis is bothering him. He has the cloudy eyes too, but we got the same answer as yours 'old dog eyes'. One test Mike showed me was to throw a cotton ball close to the face across line of vision, not hitting her and see if she reacts. So an easy one to do!
Haha on the daily activities, Flynn is copying Molly from a few hours back and is having his daily snooze too. It is the most gorgeous blue sky, with no breeze but a real heavy frost. So once it warms up I think we are in for a stunner! I quite like frosts now I know they get rid of fleas!! :D:D xx
Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
So, I did my own test to see if it was the melatonin causing the change in her and it is. I skipped an evening dose, the next morning I gave 1.5mg and then in the evening 1.5 mg of melatonin and she was her normal self all day long, playing, snoozing periodically, but in general energetic most of the day like normal and back to the window seat.
I didn't stay there, I went back to the 3 mg x2 the next day but it does confirm that it is the melatonine making her out of it and just wanting to sleep and not be interested in anything around her.
I still have to check the eyes, so I'll try that cotton ball thing.
Tonight, I am hoping she is able to sleep through the storms we are suppose to have. You know how it is, if they are up all night scared, then the humans are darn well going to be up to. :) I think Jo Ann blew her storms up this way. LOL

Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Hmmmmm.....So it was the melatonin. Did you go back to the 3mg. hoping she'll eventually adjust?
Yes, with all that Melatonin, Molly should sleep clear through those storms. ;)
Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Good job, Mom! I hope Molly adjusts to the dose soon!
Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
I agree, Good job!!! Harley was petrified of thunderstorms, but when he started taking the melatonin his fear went away and he could sleep right through them, hope Molly experiences the same.
Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Yes I went back to the 3mg because that is recommended dosage if treating solely atypical cushings and IMS wants to see how she does on this. So, back we went.
Well, yes and no, she had a case of the nerves, but we weren't having thunder, just really torrential, hard rain at times, so up on the bed she came between hubs and me and we all went to sleep. Until her fur touched hubby, who came wide awake like a mad man and molly and I woke up to. I was like what on earth!!! So, I guess he'd been dreaming that fur wasn't a good interjection into dreamland. ROFL!! Anyway, molly had enough at that point and started to pant and I put her down to get water and she did and off she went to her own bed and we all went back to bed.
Not bad, I do think she was better on than off.
Does melatonine build up in the body? I'm curious that I thought she had a adjusted and then back to the lethargic state, then when off, back to normal.
hugs all,

Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
I'm not sure. I know I had a pharmacist look it up because it bothered Zoe's eyes after awhile. She would be ok with a dose at bed time but after 3 nights, her eyes would get red so I could only give it to her 3 times a week.
Re: Molly, 10 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Oh dear, that made me laugh. What a shock for poor hubs, then waking up like that.. probably took ages for all your heart rates to slow back down. Poor Molly having to go back to her own bed for peace LOL, that is cute though!
I did a quick google of the melatonin, it has a short half life of under an hour and total body clearance in 10 hours, that was in humans but I also read it was similar in dogs. Hope that helps xxx
