Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
So I never even had a minute to respond to my Nice soul mate:)
The first time I stood on the promenade and saw the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and the Foothills of the Alps, my knees shook and I cried at the beauty of it. The light was so intense and incredible, no wonder Matisse stayed there to paint. We loved the little towns along the coast, especially Beau-lieu Su Mer and Menton. The gardens of the casino in Monte Carlo were a wow factor and Ez on the upper corniche, Oh Sharlene, I could go on and on, I loved it so. I even loved the pizzas:D:D Who thinks of good pizza in France?
Our second visit we took along splurge money. Our choice was a night at the casino or dinner at The Negresco at the Chanticleer. I picked the 10 course dinner and we thought we were in an episode of dining with the rich and famous. The food and wine were incredible.
Aww Sharlene, Nice, tell me your favorite memories.

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Ahh Nice. It's hard to even know where to begin I love it so much. I love the medieval villages high up in the mountains over looking the Mediterranean sea, like Saint-Paul or Tourrettes-sur-Loup. Seriously had some of the best pesto pasta there, although the really best one was at a roadside stop on the highway, go figure. St. Tropez was a hit also, loved it.
Nice, I love the city itself. The people were fantastic. I do love looking out over the sea from the promenade, or sitting at a sidewalk cafe, having a latte and watching the people go by. I love the harbor with all the yachts, (who knew there were so many!). We of course went to Matisse museum but I thought that was more disappointing than worthwhile, but I did love the gardens there. I got caught up in the strike marches and somehow ended up joining in. LOL It was more of a party with bands on the back of pickups and colorful groups with their own signs and flags. I have a recipe of a wonderful chicken pastry appetizer that was coerced out of a chef somehow. Still not sure how that happened, but I love it and darn, where did I put it.
You're right the gardens of Monte Carlo are beautiful. In Monaco, I loved the walk up to the palace. Did I mention that Prince Alberts car just about ran me over. I'd been at the palace watching the changing of the guard, but we noticed the black car with the bodyguards, complete with ear pieces waiting by a tree, so hung out there and then the Prince came out of a side door and got into the back seat. While the car was getting turned around to head down that narrow street, hubs and I had taken off and were just walking down the street and wala, here comes the motorcycle escorts and the car right behind and I sort of jumped of the way of the whole shebang. Even on the sidewalk, you feel like you're in the streets the roads are that narrow. That was a bit exciting and adrenaline inducing. :)
Speaking of gardens, absolutely beautiful are the ones at the Rothchild estate. Just gorgeous and words would never do them justice.
We stayed in Nice a week and went out and about every day to somewhere new. I loved the french food and the market in the old town. The Big Head is still a fun memory. In the plaza the statues on top of the tall poles amused me every evening.
Oh my god, I can just imagine how wonderful the 10 course dinner was. I'd do that in a heart beat too. There is at times an almost surreal feeling when you are there. You know it isn't going to last, but you want to soak it in so that you can pull the feeling out sometime in the future and feel the warmth of it again. I think a week was too short, but we moved on to Italy afterwards and that was another grand experience. I still love Nice area best of all though.
Molly didn't forgive us for leaving her for quite a while. It becomes harder and harder to get away for more than just 4 - 8 days. Contemplating more makes me nervous. I just worry about what can and will go wrong while she is out of our sight.
Got a sick hubby on the couch so have to go back to paying attention to him.
hugs,
Sharlene and Molly Muffin

Oh wow... take me there now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
LOL I wish we were all there now.
Molly is having a heck of a time with the snow and it all frozen. She cannot find a perfect potty spot and if she can't, then she can't poo. Then if she doesn't, she ends up with diarrhea and so had a messy bum this morning. Probably the worst ever for bum messes. I was embarrassed for her, poor thing. I brought her home and cleaned her up in a warm bath and gave her breakfast and by the end of the day she was back to pretty close to normal poos again. We went to the backyard this time where she can usually find a spot, plus the snow had melted a bit too. Not alot but enough she felt there were good potential potty spots. We'll do another walk tonight. I know Addy is on poo patrol through everyones threads. LOL And we had a doozy of one today. I know this was not due to anything other than her holding it for too long.
Definitely could do a Nice trip again though, till like summer time. :)

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
that sounds sooooooooo beautiful. i was picturing it in my mind as i read about it, and though you did not write this, suddenly i hear hear hoofs striking the ground.....I turn to look over my shoulder.....as i brush my long silky locks from my face, (lol) (snickergigglesnort) okay so I look over my shoulder and there is this massive beautiful horse, its nostrils flared, and there riding the horse is this strong, tall, man, with chiseled facial features and amazing warm eyes that are staring right into mine, he begins to wave at me and I lift my delicate hand up to wave back, LOL!!!!!!!!!!! trying to sound like fairy tale. lol.....did it work? lol!!! the place sounds amazing.
I understand the difficult part of going away for a few days.....I have hard time going away for couple of hours! i am just not as content anywhere else as I am when i am with her. lol, i know, i am a mess. lol
hope your husband gets to feeling better soon. does he have flu?
-
Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Haha Skye, I had a feeling your fairy tale was about to morph into 50 shades of grey!!:eek:
I have to go away for 10 days to Australia next month, not looking forward to leaving him, but I am looking foward to the trip going to Melbourne and Sydney. I am going to book Flynn in for checkup with the vet while I am away. While Mum and Dad are brilliant looking after him, they sometimes miss the little things. So hoping it will be OK while I am gone.
POOR Molly, so embarrassing for her. Sometimes they hate you watching when they do their business so to have to get her butt wiped must have been the ultimate insult to her modesty... OK I will give up my autumn so you can have spring with no more snow so all the babies have somewhere to poop in peace and without danger of skidding in the ice (can't belive I just said that hahaha)... hanging out for the big thaw for you guys!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
I dont usually worry about poo patrol too much with Molly:):) I'm glad it was a brief encounter:D:D:D
But I do know what you mean about the dogs not finding a place to poo. This morning we found bits of grass again along the road so they were happy, we just have to try to avoid the piles of salt in the road.:rolleyes:
We just have to hang in a bit longer, Sharlene. I think we are to get a break in the weather for a few days. We have sunshine and mild temps this morning so I hope it is heading your way:):):)
It would be nice to see the grass again but we have a lot of snow to melt before that happens:rolleyes:
Hubby just read to me they found a home for a 34 pound cat at the Missouri Humane Society. I'm trying to picture a kitty twice the size of Zoe:eek::eek::eek:
-
Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
OMG, 34lbs!! holy cow! I'm looking at molly and I can't picture a cat that big.
I really hope it's through with winter. I saw one more possibility of snow in the long range forecast for next week. Today it snowed huge big flakes, but warmed up enough that nothing really stuck, then sun came out and it melted. Now there are a few worrisome clouds over Lake Ontario Not sure if it's rain or snow or what though.
Looks like I'll need to put molly on the maturity food for awhile. She had poopy bum again this evening, so I'll try adding in a bit of the maturity and see if it clears up tomorrow and the next day. It usually does, so I'm hoping. I never, ever forget that it was a major spat of diarrhea last march that started us back in again on the cushings testing and almost a month of antibiotic, with bland diet to get her back to normal.
Of course she Acts fine as usual, just ran like a mad thing through the house a couple times. :) :) :p
We want spring! We want spring! hmm..We want summer! We want summer! (I just remembered how muddy spring can be and molly's white!)

Oh this is funny. I really thought I had written in response to your dream of the horse and the chiseled features and the water. But now I look back and don't see it. I think I just sat and stared at the screen and imagined it right along with you and forgot to actually Write what I was thinking. Talk about getting sidetracked!!!! Woman! You do paint a pretty picture.
Thank you,

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Awww poor Molly... hope this settles down quick smart! Hmmm maturity food, glad noone has suggested giving me that since my big birthday, I would have had a fit!! Does she like it? Hope it settles down her tummy, have you tried the slippery elm bark? I have some in the cupboard if you need it :D:D:D Flynn no likey! I actually have a whole load of different drugs sitting in there, various BP pills from preop, tummy remedies, vitamins, supplements, pain pills, along with a selection of foods that I will never let him eat now... I bet if we all put our various half used doggie remedies together we could sponsor and cover all the dogs in a small city in Africa!!

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
At vet Ed with Molly. She got a piece of her glucosamine stuck in esophagus. We think it cleared right after we got here. Still went ahead with X-rays. Should be heading home soon. She is an oinker with treats.
Will prob have a bit of sore throat. Sigh. Long night.
-
Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
aweeeee, how is her throat??? warm 100% pumpkin might help soothe that right up.
on all the foods....ugh....another dog food and one dog treat recall again today. other week there was a HUGE amount of them.

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Back from ER. We have to watch her for any vomiting after eating or drinking. The thought is that she probably was able to dislodge it, probably on the way to the ER or right after we got there, since she was still doing the reverse sneezing, coughing thing on the way there. The xrays are because you can't be sure that something didn't lodge further down. No xray can be definitive because it's hard to tell and that is why you have to watch for the vomiting. Well, she promptly came home and wanted a treat. So we broke a couple very small pieces up and then she went had a huge drink of water and so far seems to be fine. She is napping on her quilt right before me. I'll watch her like a hawk. If she gets sick in the middle of the night, then we'll take her right back to the ER, same thing for tomorrow. Of course everyone there loved her and thought she was adorable.
It was kind of scary though for all of us.

Good Golly Miss Molly is right!:eek: You tell her to stop that! Many of us here are much too old and fragile for such excitement! :D Well, ok, SOME of us....:p I am so glad she is alright and can just imagine your heart rate on the way to the ER. Hopefully you both got a good nite's rest and this will be one of those OMG! memories to look back on and laugh about very soon.

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
We slept through the night. With me facing Molly's bed the entire night, although I'm sure that would wake up if she stated to cough during the night. She didn't. In fact, when I woke up she was laying upside down on her bed, in the sun, with her head hanging off the end. Eyes half closed when I went over and was gently giving her belly rubs. (she is soooo adorable in the mornings, especially) Still the real test would be when she ate her breakfast and I'm happy to say, she went outside, did her business, came in and ate just over half of her breakfast (that's normal for her), with hubs and I watching her every bite and nothing. Not a cough, not a whimper, just a lip licking good experience from what I can tell. Had some water to wash it all down and that was that. Molly is obviously fine.
Last night, when she got the piece caught, she sat right next to me, while I rubbed her back a bit, but was still distressed, so I woke hubs from his nap and said look up doggie chocking, see the procedure for dislodging it we can do, but it looks a bit tricky, with possibility of her sternum being damaged doing the heimlech maneuver, so we decided to take her, plus every few minutes she was still trying to cough it back up (reverse sneezing). She continued to do this all the way there and would hang her head down, so I knew it was causing pressure to have her head up at the time. Not a normal thing for molly to hang her head for any reason, she is always curious about whats going on where. I figure better safe than sorry, and there is a chance that something stuck in the esphogus can make a tear and require surgery, or that it won't move on it's own and would have to be manipulated using the scope. The doctor said if she threw up after her breakfast to come back in and they would go straight to scoping her or if during the night she tried to drink and threw up, same thing, come back and they'd scope. She said she'd be there all night if we needed her, we could also call if we had any questions or worrying signs. So that was very nice and caring of her.
I'll be going to see if I can find smaller glucosomine treat for her today.
Anyway, just wanted to update everyone that she is okay. :)
hugs all,
Sharlene and Molly Muffin

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Oh my gosh Sharlene!!!! What a scare for you and hubby!! Very relieved to read your update today that she is doing fine. You know, occasionally Jasper will seem to kind of choke on his food, or a treat for just a few seconds, and that is scary enough when that happens. There have been a couple of times where he would kind of hack intermittently for 5 minutes or so, trying to clear something. Usually I never know what causes that, but it is scary also. Hope you all are having a good day. :)
Hugs,
Tina and Jasper

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Sharlene-
So, so glad to hear little Miss Molly is okay! That is not fun at all! Hannah once had a rawhide stuck in her throat. It was HORRIBLE. I still have a vivid memory of it. She was foaming at the mouth and couldn't breathe. We still lived with my parents and I drove to the E vet while my mom tried to help her. We thought she was going to die. She got it out in the car and we did the same thing-xrays and watching her like a hawk. It was really traumatic. I no longer let them chew anything without watching and taking it away when it gets gooey.
What a good feeling to see Molly sleeping and eating happily. I'm so glad she wasn't hurt or in any more pain. Sounds like you were lucky to have a great vet too! Woo-hoo! Give Molly an extra hug and tummy rub from me tonight. Hopefully you will all have a more restful, uneventful night tonight!

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Thanks all. Molly is still doing fine and I haven't noticed any issues with her throat. She hasn't coughed any more at all, no reverse sneezing, no scratchy bark sounds either and she did bark today so that is good. She was barking at a leaf that she wanted that she couldn't reach and was determined needed to be torn to pieces. I guess she feels pretty good. I'm not giving her any more of those particular glucosomine treats any more either. Even though they are malleable and not hard, she obviously doesn't chew it up enough. I'll have to find another something small.
Oh Julie, I know exactly how scary the rawhide can be. That was the first thing Molly ever chocked on, my husband was away, she was about 2 years old, and I kept putting water on my finger and giving it to her and then we walked and once she walked she coughed it up. I didn't know what to do, I'd never had a dog choke before. She is also very aggressive with rawhide, she'll actually bite you if you try to take one away from her. She isn't allowed to have any rawhide at all any longer. I don't know what I would have done if she hasn't been able to breathe. That would be horrible, I'm glad your mom was with you to help you get Hannah to the ER and that it all turned out okay.
Molly has had lots of belly rubs today and hugs and kisses. She's starting to run when she sees me coming. I think she's trying to say enough already mum. I'm fine!! ROFL

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
i am thrilled to hear she is doing okay!!!! have you considered maybe cosequinn sprinkle capsules? those work good. and you just sprinkle part of the capsule and blend into their food.
for choking on small breeds, cradle in your arms, like a baby, use your other hand using middle finger and ring finger on one side and the other is thumb, over the chest area and quick squeeze. Called Taco Technique. If still conscious and choking like cough or gag they have chance of working it out themselves.....but not always as you know. and you did the right thing as you know getting to vet. But if conscious and cant cough or has "stridor" you can do chest thrusts, by placing hands on either side of chest and thrusting inward and in direction you want object to go. but again....start being prepared to head to vet. I suggest to all my clients to get certfied in animal cpr and first aide. and learn to make first aide kit out of items you have at home. Our first aide kit here at home is entirely animal friendly and use for us too. I carry smaller version in trunk of car even. lol
much easier to type out than to be in the moment of it happening though.....
So happy so thrilled all is well and morning snuggles are awesome. luvs them.

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
Hey Mel and Skye (and all),
Molly is doing good. She didn't seem to have any ill effects from her adventure. Us not so sure. :) Her vet called today to check on her. That was nice of her. I switched to a glucosomine treat that will crumble as soon as she bites into it. The vet thought that would work with her, but we all know now, that molly likes to scarf down the treats. She said if I notice anything she has some at her office that can be cut in half and might work.
I have to go to the vets office on Wed to pick up the liver supplement. I went by on Saturday but turns out the girls can't dispense it because it's a drug. I said, gee, I thought it was a supplement, but no go, I had to wait for the vet to be In to get it. Anyway, I'll take a look at her glucosomine treats while I'm there.
Thanks for checking in gals!
hugs,
Sharlene and Molly muffin
I did try the cosequinn sprinkle capsules Skye, that was the first thing I used with Molly. I just got tired of having to pay the price the vet wants for them.

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
on the capsules.........i pay about 1/3 the price the nutritionist charged. I showed her the site, the bottle the capsule everything and it exact in every way the same. she said absolutely order it and not purchase from there.
I even get her denmarin and her fortiflora and her omega 3 oil much less. And it is exactly the same, and not of poor quality or expired. let me know if you would like link. :)

Re: Molly, 9 yr, shih tzu - lhasa aspo, cushing diagnosis
It can be frustrating that so many things here in Canada you need a vet prescription for and can't just buy online. Very frustrating.
We're good with the treats we have now, they crumble when she bites into them and shouldn't get chocked on them.
Thanks for checking on us :)

Hey Sharlene, what a scare. Glad Molly is okay. I just got on and saw that Molly got choked on the supplement. Do we ever have a week without a scare, but it came out ok. Love, JoA
