Cooling Mats
What I'm about to share with you will sound insane, so consider the source. :D:D
Back when Buddy was so miserable with the heat, Naomi - Frasier and Ozzie's mom suggested that I purchase a cooling pad for Buddy. I tried my hardest to locate the kind of pad that she was talking about. I never did find one until a few weeks ago, when I no longer needed one. Isn't that always the way it is? The kind of mat that she had for her boys did not require refrigeration. It naturally cools with the use of gel inside the mat. It comes with a soft machine washable cover that goes over it. The one I found was at a store that sells overstocked and discontinued items from other stores. It measures 30" x 40". Rosie does not get too warm, but I thought it would be good to have one on hand and I couldn't pass up the price. I only paid $16 for it. Others online run way over $100 for smaller versions. I know this is long. Stay with me people.;)
Rosie does not need a cooling mat. She never gets too warm. I have never even seen her pant. However, I get very warm! Can you see where this is going? :D Yes, I have been sleeping on that dog mat for the last few weeks and it does cool very well! They should sell these things for postmenopausal women. They would make a fortune!:D Rosie may never get this pad because I need it more than she does. This is hilarious even to me!:D:D
As far as cooling dogs, I'm not sure if it works or not, but it works for postmenopausal women with hot flashes. Well, at least one. :D:D
I am adding a photo from the box in my "Check it out" Album

Re: Cooling Mats
Hey girls, there's such a thing as a "chillow" (cooling pillow) that's supposed to be great for hot flashes, too! ;) :)

Re: Cooling Mats
Now that I've tested the cooling mat, I have come to a few conclusions. The mat does what it claims. The warmer my core body temperature, the faster the mat chills. It does seem to suck in the heat and release a cooling sensation. Yesterday I went out and did some errands. It was 95 degrees and I don't do well in the heat. I overheated. I came home nauseated and spread the mat down on my bed. I laid down and cooled off completely in less than 10 minutes. I was even starting to feel a little chilled. It really does whisk heat away from your body, leaving you feeling much cooler. I'm not sure how it works, but it does. Refrigeration or freezing is not needed, although the mat can be cooled or frozen.
I do think a mat such as this would help our Cush pups cool down and feel much more comfortable. It would benefit short haired dogs the most, as their skin would be in closer contact with the mat. I wish I had one of these when Buddy was so hot and miserable.

Re: Cooling Mats
Kathy, where do I find your ' Check it out' album to check out cooling pads?
Ginger def needs one after her businesses outside. For now I stand and hold her in front of the air conditioner for a couple of minutes and after that she goes right back to panting. But during those two minutes she goes into her relaxing position with her eyes closed, head hanging back. I'm going to buy one. She will love it. Thanks for the info.

Re: Cooling Mats
Hmm. I've checked out a couple of them online and not sure if they are the same kind Kathy is talking about because they both have mostly great reviews but also got pretty bad reviews also.:o
Kathy, can you tell me the name of your mat, plz? I didn't see the name on the pics. Thanks. Song.

Re: Cooling Mats
Hi Song,
My mat is called, " Cooling Mat for Dogs". Think Dog is the company that manufactures it. Item # 848685 UPC 084153600263
This is the first one like this that I have seen locally. Petsmart has crate pads that you refrigerate. They call them, "Cooling Pads" It not the same thing, but probably serves the same purpose. . The one I have is very large, 30"x40" and I haven't needed to refrigerate it. It comes with a soft protective cover. It is big enough for me to lie down on and pretty heavy. It must be the gel! The gel is non-toxic, but these pads are not really made for aggressive chewers. You might want to look for one smaller for Ginger. Mine is so large because it's the only one they had. It was super cheap, so I snatched it up. My mom taught me well!;):D
Naomi is one of our members who suggested this type of pad for my Buddy well over a year ago. I finally found what she described.
It even works in the car! My tushi can be nice and cool, before the AC kicks on. ;)
I hope this helps. Happy hunting!:p

Re: Cooling Mats
I bought something similar for Tobey, because she was so hot and panting. Darn stubborn girl would not lay on it, no matter what. :( I ended up getting rid of it. Now I am thinking I need another... for hubby, hahah!
