Hello,
I have an 11 year old female American Foxhound with Cushings. She is tolerating Vetoryl well but she has a little dribbling of urine which is causing her to lick a lot and skin around her crotch, anus, and belly is red and agitated. I have read a bit about Proin but like some input from others on this. Thank you so much in advance and I am so glad I found this forum!!

Hello and welcome to you and your girl! I do not have personal experience with Proin or dribbling, so I'll leave that to other folks to address. But I'm very glad you've found us :), and I would love to hear more about your dog's history with both Cushing's and Vetoryl. How long has she been taking the Vetoryl, and have her other symptoms pretty much resolved? How about the results of any recent monitoring ACTH testing?

When we hear about unresolved urination issues, our first thoughts always turn to the possibility that the cortisol level may still be running too high, or perhaps the dog may have an ongoing urinary tract infection. So if you can tell us more about her experience with Vetoryl and also recent lab testing, that will help us a lot.

Thanks in advance for any additional info!
Marianne

Hi and welcome to you and your pup! My last Cush pup, Maggie, had a serious problem with "dribbling", usually when resting. I gave her Proin but, after a while, found it was just not working. With the concurrence of my vet, I decided to try "Leaks No More" and it was a complete turn-around. I was able to give her the recommended dose and then wean down until she no longer needed it. The vet recommended that I not stop the Proin until I saw improvement when using the "Leaks No More" so I went that route. He was impressed with how well it worked and started suggesting it to some of his clients.

I did try to keep Maggie's urethra area clean, using baby wipes, as urine can be quite irritating. You can also apply diaper rash cream (Dr. Smith's is the one I use -- not greasy and absorbs quickly) which provides a barrier on the skin just like it does with a baby!

My non-Cush dog, Quincy, leaked from the age of 2. And "leaked" is an understatement, she was "flooding" :D After thourough examinations, bloodwork, urinesamples tested, etc...it was determined she had the "spayed dog incontinence" and is now on Enurace (is Ephedrine). Just 24 hours after taking her first dose, she has not lost a single drop of urine anymore in the past 2 years since she is on Enurace :) So, for Quincy it works just fine but I also know of some dogs that had to go through several different medications before finding one that works for that dog. And Enurace (Ephedrine) has several interactions with other medications and should not be given in certain circumstances healthwise... My advice would be, to have the "dribbling" examined to rule out other causes like stones, infections, etc and then discuss with your vet what would be the best solution for your dog :)

Terry,

I've had quite a bit of experience with my girl "dribbling". I call it "leaking and licking" or "licking and leaking", not sure which comes first. Uncontrolled Cushings seemed to make matters worse because of the increased water intake. Does her urine have an weird odor? The leaking and licking then causes a UTI because of licking her "Crotch and Anus" which makes matters worse. Through urine cultures we found that the UTI is usually caused from eColi which can be treated with enrofloxacin successfully(may need to treat for 28 days instead of the normal 10-14). The best treatment is to get Cushings under control and get rid of the UTI if she has one. My girl also takes DES (Diethylstilbestrol) once a week down from every three days since we've finally broken the cycle.

I'm not advocating DES over Proin they accomplish the same goal. The point is you have to break the cycle and it is very much a chicken vs egg scenario. I hope this helps.
