Back in Sept. '08, Squirt had a bout of pancreatitis brought on by handling of the organ during an unrelated surgery. I started cooking for her in an effort to control the amount of fat in her diet...actually I tried to remove all fat - very bad. :o Her food contained spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower and some other veggies plus chicken...boiled to a mush until the water was clear of oil. :rolleyes: Then I went to a vet who gave us a diet which also suggested veggies from the same class as I was using, the Brassicas. Then in Dec. '08 I contracted to have a diet designed for Squirt with a nutritional consultant and she has been on that diet since.

Squirt had some lab done in Dec. '08 and her T4 was 1.3, down from the 2.5 it had been all along (norms 1-5). Today I had her retested and the T4 is 2.8, norm 1-4.

I have read on the nutrition forums I belong to and in my studies that the Brassicas are not recommended for pups with hypothyroidism but today I have my own confirmation of this. After about 4 months of eating food that contained these veggies, Squirt's T4 dropped like a rock. After getting on a well balanced diet designed for her, taking into consideration all her health history, environment, age, activity level, likes/dislikes, personality, breeds, life style and prior feeding history, and so on, her levels are back where they should be.

I went searching to make sure I don't use these veggies in the future for Squirt and wanted to share what I found with you. The first link has a good list of veggies in this family, also called cruciferous.

Thanks for those links. I looked at them as well. Nike and Kenai have always been on the Solid Gold Hundenflocken Nike 12 years, and kenai 8. then I put Kenai on the old fat dog food, holistique it think it was. Anyway what I read on those sites say that even though it is a higher end food it is no where near the best due to the amount of actual meat. I switched them over to Blue Wilderness and Innova Evo, changed a couple months ago. They like it and I dont feed them as much of it. The price is the same as the Solid Gold and they are getting a higher quality food

What do you think the best Senior Low Fat Dog food is out there for Cushing's dog? I am not able to cook for my dog everyday at this point. But, I want to make sure once I get his cushing's under control I switch to something healthy for him.

hello fellow texan!!!!! i home cook my girl meals, i cook up about a month at a time, very simple, the longest part is what is in the croc pot that cooks.
I know of a great Nutritionist and Internal Medicine Doctor as well if that is at all helpful
