View Full Version : 13 y/o Silky Terrier - Trilostane
My 13yr old Silky was put on this drug Dec 2 2013. He seems less hungry but I am not sure its working. Does anyone else have any idea how long it takes before his hair comes back etc?
How long does it take for this drug to work? My Silky terrier was put on this Dec 2 2013.
He seems less ravenous but his hair loss is still extreme:confused:

My pug has been on vetoryl for a month or so. Her hair, and the CC, have not shown marked improvement, although there have been some changes.
I've been told that hair and skin issues may be the last to resolve. It's frustrating, but I am trying to be patient.

It can take some time to resolve all symptoms, a months isn't long at all and each dog responds differently.
The important thing is to do the periodic ACTH tests to be sure that your dog is on the right dosage. daisy has been on it since May 2013 and her fur was the last to improve, but it has finally and she lost quite a bit of it. Her chest was bare, her stomach, tail, and top of her head and ears. Most of it has grown back now.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
As some of the others has mentioned it can take awhile for the hair to grow back.
How much does your dog weigh and how many mg of trilostane is he on?
Also do you have the ACTH results from the before starting and then the monitoring test after starting trilostane? That can tell you a good deal too as being in therapeutic range is crucial for resolution of sypmptoms.
Welcome again

My terrier weighs 12.4 lbs and he has been on 10mg since Dec 2
I notice he is quieter but still food seeking. I do see some of his old personality coming back though, yesterday he picked up his favorite toy and carried it down the hall. Less thirst and urination. But the vet said keep him on the Selegine as well. It was the drug we tried first in May 12.
He never confirms for Cushing's. Even though his liver enzymes are off the charts. And his ultra sound shows a large liver but no cancer. I was told by the first vet he probably has Cushings but he could not confirm it. ( the third vet gave us the Trilostane )
Thanks folks

Welcome to the forum. I know you said you are giving trilostane and your baby probably has Cushings???? I know you said the liver is enlarged. What are the other symptoms you Alf is presenting with. I am concerned your dog has not had the proper testing as many other diseases have similar symptoms and you so not want to be giving Vetoryl if your dog has not diagnosed. It requires several kinds of testing such as LDDS, Urine Creatinine, ACTH, Blood Panel, and Ultra Sound. Did the vet look at the adrenals when he did the US? If so what did he see there? You landed at the best place possible if you dog does have Cushings. We are here for support and any questions you have so you are not alone in this,. If you have had any of this testing done please post the abnormal numbers for us along with the normal ranges given by the lab as they are all different. Blessings

There are several tests that can be done to confirm for cushings. LDDS, ACTH, ultrasound.
Most vets wouldn't start medication unless they knew that cushings is the culprit and not thyroid, diabetes or other issue.
Once trilostane is started there should be follow up ACTH test to make sure that the cortisol is coming down into proper range and not going too low or remaining too high. Have any of the follow up tests been done. Normally you test at 10 - 14 days, then at 30 days if no change in dosage.
Symptoms tend to clear up as the cortisol is brought into an optimal range for your dog.

Thanks everybody. Since May 2012 this dog has had ALL the tests. The stim tests, the ultra sound. We have collected urine. Numerous blood work. He comes back in good:confused::confused: shape all except the liver enzymes.
And he has had the cough, the hunger the thirst. He had weakness in the back legs. In other words he has/had at least 5 or more of the clinical signs of Cushings. I understand the vetroyl leaves the body after 12 hrs. I just wonder how long it takes to stop the over production of cortisol that is creating these symptoms?

Every dog responds differently to the trilostane. My Tipper showed signs of her cortisol going down lower within hours of her first dosage. Every dog is different in the way their body responds. Blessings
