Well, I will be joining the puppy legion soon :D Today I was asked to take in a 7 week old Welsh Springer Spaniel pup who also will be a Service Dog in training  It's for about 3 months only so I agreed to take the little thing in and start his training ;) I will have the rugs removed before he arrives so that all "accidents" will be easily mopped up :p And also, since I will be going on a vacation during his stay here, he will be joining and going on this vacation too, that will be so much fun...me, a friend and a total of FIVE dogs  :D
I have the honour of naming him but haven't found a good name yet...so for now he's "the pup" ;) I put his picture (http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=61&pictureid=2804) in Yunah's album and oh my....is he CUTE :D But don't ask me again next week, I may think differently all together about him, hahahaha...

Well, 48 hours ago, Vikotor came into my home and into our lives :) He's such a sweetheart! He get's along very well with Yunah and is settling in ohhhh so nicely :D
Yesteday's video (http://youtu.be/0bn9jMj6gBA) (after been here only 24 hours) showing how we practice "come here" (viens) and oh what fun it is ;) And he already knows to "sit and wait" before entering any space, doorway, etc. Of course it helps A LOT having Yunah there to show him what's expected ;) He's doing what she's doing and therefore he's learning so easily, by example :)
Today's video (http://youtu.be/medk_rwJ8Rs) is a compilation of pictures taken during our various walks :) Viktor meeting people, walking beside the wheelchair, running around with Yunah, etc., in short, a pup having fun :D

What a comical face Victor has! :p That last shot of him zonked out is so cute!
I didn't understand a word of the song but the music was hilarious with the clips! The crescendos were timed just about perfectly. :p It made me feel proud for him and made me laugh with him at the same time. :)

Leslie, he DOES have a comical face :D Kind of like he has too much skin around his face, he needs to grow into his skin some more ;) He's a sweetheart, very gentle for a pup :)
Terri, here's another video (http://youtu.be/nQmUfIiodJQ) :D Viktor walking on his leash, (trying to) pay attention, sit and wait and then yeahhhhhhh he can enter my backyard :p
Puppy love indeed, John, especially since he lets me sleep all through the night :D The first 2 nights he woke up once to pee and last night, the 3rd one, he slept without waking up at all ;) What an examplary pup :p

This time it's a bit less good news I'm afraid. Yunah has torn her cranial cruciate ligament in her right hindleg and blew her meniscus :( Yesterday we were at the vet's and upon physical exam the cranial cruciate ligament test was positive (and Yunah screaming in pain) and the x-rays showed a loose fragment of the mensicus.
So now we're waiting to hear from an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in knees. I suspect that Yunah will have TTA surgery sometime soon. Will keep you updated,
Sas and Yunah :)

The first thing I thought of was ouch, that poor sweet girl and then I thought, hmmm?, she is going to have to be kept quiet so I wonder how difficult that is going to be for a service dog whose days are filled with work. I suspect it won't be easy for her physically or emotionally.
I'm so sorry this happened to your girl. I'll be thinking positive thoughts and praying that the surgery is a complete success.

Oh, Sas, I am so sorry to hear about Yunah's problem. :( I know how difficult it was for Squirt to be down and she is just my companion, not a working dog. You will both be so lost for a bit but I know you will be able to help her and yourself get through this.
Know ya'll are not alone; we are right by your side the whole time, cheering you on.

Thanks all :)
Actually, I am not concerned at all and very calm :) I know Yunah will get through her recovery period with flying colours ;) She's a good girl and will understand/feel that she has to take it easy...I know she will! And also, recovery after a TTA is easier and faster then after a TPLO. With TPLO it can take 6 months before they are up and running as before, with TTA it will take 3 months till she's back at her old level, they are even allowed to "walk" 24 hours after the surgery. Of course on leash and to pee or poo only but it's a huge difference :) And after 2 months you can start building on their physical condition again....so that's a huge plus for the TTA over the TPLO. And of course, she is currently in perfect (muscle) condition so....I am not worried at all :) And whatever will happen...it will not change the outcome namely that Yunah is here to stay forever, no matter what :)
But again, I have to speak with the orthopedic surgeon first, hopefully sometime this week. But with vacation time and all...who knows :) But I want this specific surgeon for Yunah and no one else so if it means we have to wait a bit, we will.

Hi Saskia,
Although I don't post much, i am always following along. So sorry to read about Yunah's injury it always tugs at one of those strings in my heart. Under your care and supervision, I am confident she will do great. Give her a few pats and hugs from me :)

Sas & Yunah , was reading your comments and would like to say having had Natcho go through two cruciate ligaments in two years , i can relate to just what you are feeling right now ..although Yunah seems to have some other problems as well ..i am sending healing prayers your way ...:)...(( hugs ))

Pats and hugs delivered and gratefully accepted ;)
Catherine, thanks :) Fortunately Yunah does not have any other (health) problems and she is in perfect condition. And given her weigth (29lbs), the relatively new TTA procedure, the best orthopedic surgeon in this country and Yunah's good nature I am very confident we will get through this without any serious problems :)
And after her stitches are removed we will start hydrotherapy to help her heal and regain her musclestrength. She's fit, healthy and very sensible, this Yunah of mine, she'll do great ;)

Leslie, yes, I agree, swimming, underwater tredmills, massages, etc are all so helpfull in healing :) It will be a bit bittersweet for me, taking Yunah to this rehab centre since I last visited there with Sogno, to help with his HD. There are still pictures of him in the underwater tredmill and swimmingpool in his album here.
Soon I will have pictures of Yunah there as well :) I was expecting vacationpictures around that time but of course I cancelled my vacation, so tredmill pictures insead :p
Sas and Yunah :)
Oh Sas,
You can do videos of Yunah on the underwater treadmill. Last summer I loved watching Squirt swimming in the pool. John's Rozee too.:):):) There is just something about a pup swimming that is too cute.

Good thought Addy :D With Sogno I didn't have a camera that could do video's, just still pictures, But with my latest camera I can do video's.... I'll make sure you'll see Yunah swim and work out on the underwater treadmill ;)

Eventhough it's not a video, I always loved this picture (http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=67&pictureid=544) of Sogno, so tired of all the excercises, cuddling with his therapist :)
I love the picture too!!!!! Sogno really is cuddling. Awwwww. What a great photo.
Wow, that is some therapy pool;)

Major surprise  We saw the orthopaedic surgeon yesterday and she decided not to do the surgery...yet :D Her conclusion after physical exam, seeing Yunah walk, x-rays and all that was that Yunah had her CCL partially ruptured. And since she x-rayed both Yunah's hips and knees, and none of them showed even the slightest sign of arthrosis and due to Yunah's light weigth, she wanted to try and see if Yunah could heal on her own. She had everything going for her to succeed. She told me that if Yunah was a Lab (for example) twice Yunah's weigth, she would have proposed TTA surgery without any hesitation. But in Yunah's case, she is hopefull that the CCL will heal without the surgery :) She told me: " We can do many wonderful things, have the best techniques and equipment and dogs in general will do very well after a TTA procedure, but, no matter how hard we try, we can never match the work of mother nature" :) Meaning, if Yunah is capable to heal without surgery, her knee will still be her own knee, no screws and plates and sawing into her bones. And her own, original knee, is always the best ;)
I was very very pleased that she is not one of those ""cutting-happy" surgeons :D So now, Yunah is on 6 weeks of total and absolute rest  She can walk 4 times a day for 10 minutes. No playing, no running, no working, no nothing. Just those 4 walks a day, 10 minutes each. Not even hydrotherapy. She is not allowed to use that leg in any way at all. Once those 6 weeks have passed, and Yunah is doing well, we can start building up again, slowly...and go to hydrotherapy down the road :) So, it still will be a several month long road to recovery...but without the surgery and with her own knee intact :)
Keeping my fingers crossed Yunah's knee will heal the way we want to and surgery is not needed :) And that we can make it through those 6 weeks of absolute rest
Saskia and Yunah :)
Crossing my fingers too, Sas, she is such a helper and loves it so.
Hopefully it won't be terrribly difficult the next six weeks.
Glad she did not need surgery.
Love,
Addy

Oh Saskia! This is wonderful news! :D I am so, so glad to hear that surgeon say to give Mother Nature a chance to heal Yunah in her natural state. I so hope the rest works for her! Did they mention a cart to keep the weight off or would that allow too much activity? John's Rozee was in a cart for 18 mos. after which she can walk again without aid. If this is something that might be in her future, look into Eddie's Wheels - they are great!
Ya'll take advantage of Yunah's time off work for extra cuddles, kisses and snuggles! Both of you rest and enjoy each others company just for the sake of the companionship. ;)

Hi Sas-
I just ran across this thread. Viktor is sooooooooooo cute! I love all the videos.
I am sorry Yunah injured herself but am really glad to hear she'll get a chance to try to heal on her own. I can tell you from experience that a replacement knee is nothing like the original equipment!

Susan, he is indeed pretty cute ;) But due to Yunah's knee injury, he had to move a bit sooner then planned. He's know with his official foster family and doing great :D
Leslie, I bought Yunah a stroller  The limited walks, the no working, it all goes very well. Except that she is so used to follow me around the house everywhere I go. If I go make coffee, Yunah stands up, walks with me to the kitchen, lays down and when my coffee is ready, she'll stand up again, walks with me to the livingroom and lays beside my wheelchair again. And throughout the day, there are plenty of times I move from one place to another. So I had to figure out a solution otherwise she still would be walking wayyyy too much, not to mention all the standing up, laying down, standing up agaiin, etc. So I bought her a stroller :D. That way she can accompany me without having to walk and be at my side wherever I go ;) I'm already having a blast, picturing myself sitting in front of my kitchensink, doing the dishes, Yunah in her stroller beside me. And if she starts to cry, all I have to do is rock the stroller, hahahaha....
Good grief, that girl might not even want to start working ever again ;) The stroller will arive tomorrow and I will definately share the pics here :D

Hi Sas,
I wanted to say hi and ask how Yunah is and to tell you the advice you gave Susan, I think, about keeping a pups attention by walking and giving a treat and not talking is AWSOME:D:D I am so excited:D
We have a fenced in yard but it has lots of trees and flower beds and little creatures running around so whenever I would have my Koko loose in the back yard he would totally ignore me and get into troubles even eating wood chips:eek::eek: Well, I followed your advice and changed it a bit and I have been taking him out to the yard, no leash and I don't talk I just walk around and feed him bits of chicken. I sit in a chair and feed him bits of chicken. I throw his ball and when he brings it back to me I feed him chicken.
Well, yesterday my husband was also sitting in the yard and I brought Koko out and he was such a GOOD BOY.:D He stayed right at my side, when I sat in the chair, he laid at my feet. If he started to stray away I said "Oh, oh" and he stopped and came right back and when I threw his toy he ran after it, then brought it right back to me and dropped it.:D
We can now have fun in the yard and he can be free thanks to YOU:D
Hugs,
Addy

Actually Addy...thanks to YOU! You put the effort and time into actually working on it with Koko :D And that is what it boils down to, every time...effort, patience, more effort and more patience...but it will pay off in the end ;) Imagine, being a pup and distraction everywhere. Not just any distraction but trees, and things moving and smelling good and things to eat and to chew on....geezzzzz that would be difficult to ignore for any pup :p So, we just have to be more fun then any other very fun thing around :D And well, since we aren't all that funny...treats will usually do the trick :p
I am so happy it worked out so well for you and Koko, I am so proud of the both of you :)
I spoke with the orthopedic surgeon yesterday and unfortunately the 6 weeks of rest, haven't healed Yunah's CCL. I knew it wasn't a certainty but well worth the try :) So now we have to go back, next Tuesday to make new x-rays of the knee and to do the pre-surgery stuff like checking heart, lungs and blood. And we will schedule Yunah's surgery as well that day. So for now all I know is that she will definately have surgery and that I will see the orthopedic surgeon next Tuesday to discuss matters further and to set a date for the surgery.
Thanks for asking!
Sas and Yunah :)
Hi Sas,
I'm sorry to hear the six weeks of rest did not help Yunah but I am sure the surgery will go well and she will be just fine. We will all be beaming healing light your way and we may create quite the tsunami with our positive thought and prayers:):)

Sas, I had been following & was sorry to hear about Yunah's cruciate injury. I'm even more sorry to hear that she will have to have surgery. I can tell you that it has been slightly over a year since Chewy had his, & he is doing fine. Granted Chewy is not as active as Yunah, but I know it will work out. If your interested Chewy's procedure was called a TPLO which I think is tibial plateau leveling osteotomy which basically plates everything across the knee joint, but gives the pup a perfectly functional joint.

Hi Sas,
I am so sorry to hear Yunah's knee will need surgery. I was trying to find your thread and today there it was staring me in the eye when I came into the site.
I do really want to thank you for your message on helping us with Ella.:)

Thanks all :)
I suspect Yunah will have the TTA instead of the TPLO but I won't know that for certain until Tuesday, when we will see the orthopedic surgeon again :) It was well worth the try, to start her off on rest...if it would have been succesful it would have saved her (and my pocketbook) a surgery ;) But she should be okay after surgery and able to work another 5 or 6 years and that's the goal. Having her back doing what she loves most, working and being a dog, running and playing and having fun :D
After our visit to the clinic on Tuesday, I will let you know what she said...and when the surgery will be :)

Oh, Sas, I have plenty of experience with this one, too! Years ago when Barkley blew his out, he had a TTA. He had to go back to surgery 7 weeks after the first trip, when I let him out of crate to take him to the kitchen for supper one night. He was not acting like a maniac or anything, simply walking right behind me to the kitchen. He yelps, I turn around & he's limping. Of course this was a Friday evening, starting the July 4th holiday, so getting him back to the surgeon right away wasn't going to happen.
Barkley was such a well behaved dog that I really didn't have to crate him. I had set up a portable pen in the living room for him to stay in while I was at work. I explained to my Mom that he would have to leashed & walked out to the backyard for "potty" breaks, then put back in the pen. I get home one afternoon about a week after this started, proceed to watch my Mom open the back door to let B out to the yard with no leash. I'm freaking out, in panic mode, when my Mom states, "Please calm down & just watch." B very carefully steps out the back door, Mom stands at the door watching, B walks over to a corner of the porch, lifts his leg to do his thing. Mom tells him, "Alright, you have to come back in, now". Barkley just strolls right back in the house, pretty as you please, while I'm standing there with my jaw on the floor. I then find out that Mom has been leaving him out of the pen with no problems, so that was the end of that. B seemed to understand that his leg was hurt, & he needed to be quiet without either of us harping on him.
I don't know what the current line of thinking is in Europe for this surgery, but Chewy's surgeon said the TTA has really fallen out of favor over, calling it "old school". He did say that he will do a TTA on rare occasions, but not very often.
Debbie

Wow Deb...that Barkley! How they can surprise us, heh? :D
And wow again..because as far as I know, TTA is rather new  So new even, there are hardly studies about the long term effect  Here, TPLO is used mainly for the large(r) breeds and depending on the owners financial possibilities, small(er) dog get either TTA's or simply an artificial ligament.
Are you sure you mean TTA and not TTO instead? (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement vs Triple Tibial Osteotomy) It's enough to drive a sane person insane, TPLO, TTO, TTA :D If you google TTA you'll see it's a very enhanced surgery, comparable to the TPLO. Here's (http://www.breckenridgeanimalclinic.com/canine-tta-tplo-surgery.html) an example. I do think the experience with the TTA in Europe is longer than in the USA, it was used here longer... Anyway, have a look, it's pretty interesting :)
How's that Obi of yours doing? :)

Sas, I was dead wrong about Barkley's procedure, that's what I get for trying to post that late at night. After looking it up on the internet, I realized it. He had the very old school procedure where the ruptured ligament was simply replaced by monofilament line. The first surgery didn't completely fail, but the surgeon told me that when he got in, the line had stretched so far out, it might as well have just broken which is what usually happened. Chewy's surgeon did say that he still does the monofilament line procedure, but very, very seldom.

My, my, my...that Yunah, she never ceases to amaze me :D
Today we went to see the orthopedic surgeon (OS) because of Yunah's ongoing problems. She was diagnosed with a partially torn CCL and put on 6 weeks of rest. After 6 weeks I didn't see the improvement I was hoping for and so, after a consultation with the OS by phone, she wanted to see Yunah and prepare for surgery...
So of we went this morning, totally convinced I would return with an appointment for her knee surgery... The OS first wanted to see her walk again and much to my surprise she said that Yunah was walking 100% better with her right knee  But, she added, she could see why I wasn't content with the way Yunah walked since she wasn't walking right. But it was not due to her knee. So in we went for a physical exam and this time, the instability in Yunah's knee was gone, again "proof" that her ligament had in fact healed with rest. So, the OS now focussed on Yunah's back...also because she had noticed Yunah dragging her nails on the ground during walking. Upon physical exam, there was one very distinct area that would cause Yunah to yelp when the OS would manipulate that area. And this time Yunah had to go for x-rays of her spine
When we returned to the OS to discuss the x-rays, she told (and showed) me that the problem was indeed located in Yunah's back. Between the last lumbar vertebra and the sacrum there was a calcified ligament  No arthrosis, no spondylosis...thankfully but just that one calcified ligament. This is most likely due to some trauma somewhere in the past (not related to her knee at all).
But due to the knee injury, Yunah lost muscle mass in her hind quartes. And the loss of muscle mass is the cause that Yunah is now having some problems with the calcification because, with the muscle mass gone, it now presses against her spinal cord.
It's crazy, I know but let me try and explain this. Let's say that the calcification has the size of a grain of rice. And let's say that normally Yunah's muscle mass is as thick as 2 grains of rice. In that case she doesn't have a problem with the calcification since it is "embedded" in her muscles. But when she lost muscle mass due to the CCL injury, her muscle mass decreased to the size of half a grain of rice. And under those circumstances, the calcification puts pressure on her spinal cord.
I hope this makes it easier to understand.
Now, the thought is that once Yunah gaines her muscle mass back, the calcification won't bother her. And therefore, we are now starting the hydrotherapy. Our first (extended intake) appointment will be this coming Saturday, 11 in the morning :) Of course, it is impossible to predict if, and if so when, the calcification will grow. If this will happen then, of course, she eventually will get more and more problems with the calcified ligament pressing against her spinal cord. But since she now has only mild complaints and since there is good hope that with gaining muscle mass back she will be symptom free again, surgery is out of the question. In fact, in cases like this and in area's like this, they will only perform surgery when the dog is screaming out in pain 24 hours a day...since the procedure (the area) it too risky.
So for now it's working on her regaining her muscles and her physical condition and if all goes well (and that is the expectation) then she can go back to work full time :)
So if Yunah hadn't injured her CCL, we might not have known at all she has a calcified ligament between her last lumbar vertebra and her sacrum... And, after all , her CCL DID heal with the rest :D
So all in all, I am a happy person but amazed at all the "stunts" Yunah pulls on us ;)

My goodness, Sas! What a convoluted path to discover a problem! :p Sort of a bass-ackwards blessing, huh? :D
It is amazing what rest and simple therapy can do for these babies. I saw it in Crys so often and was ever grateful there were non-surgical ways I could help her. The hydrotherapy will help Yunah immensely and she will be back to full strength in no time! But something tells me she is gonna want to take a ride in her buggy from time to time just for the fun of it! :p And it wouldn't surprise me at all if one day she tried to push your chair like you pushed her buggy! ;):D She is one smart cookie!

Today Yunah had her intake appointment for the hydrotherapy. After reading the letter of the orthopedic surgeon and studying the x-rays of Yunah’s spine it was time to videotape Yunah walking. (and me too, walking Yunah  ) We had to walk in straight lines, in circles clockwise and counterclockwise, we had to walk the figure 8, walking slower, faster and running. This all was videotaped from behind, from the front, the left side and the right side…
Needless to say I most desperately needed a rest after that :D So we returned inside and Monique (the hydrotherapy therapist) began to examine Yunah together with the physical therapist, checking her posture, her muscles, reflexes, measured how she divides her weight over all her 4 legs when standing still and “square” and lots of other things, while I was sipping my coffee and watching ;)
Three things stood out. First of all, Yunah wasn’t bearing the amount of weight that she should on her right hind leg (that’s the leg that had the knee injury and also it’s the side where she has the calcification). Secondly, the muscles in Yunah’s tail were extremely tense and tight and thirdly, the “small” muscles in Yunah’s lower back weren’t doing their job, Yunah wasn’t using them
We will do the “weight bearing measurement” again after 10 sessions of hydro- and other therapy to see if that has improved it. For the tail muscles I was taught a technique that I can use to relax those muscles and to release the tension. And for the “small” muscles in the lower back she taught me a technique so I can get those muscles to tighten/contract…so they will build up some strength and can start working again. I can do these exercises/techniques 5 times a day each.
So we then had some time left and Yunah was placed in the underwater treadmill. She walked in there for about 10 minutes. Her walking on the treadmill was also videotaped. Monique will take all videos and the program she uses has all kinds of cool features so she can make a videotape with slow-motion images, 3-D images etc so in the end, it will be a valuable tool to watch exactly where things go wrong in Yunah moving. The orthopedic surgeon will get a copy and I will be given a password…so I can see the video as well. Not sure if I will be able to download it….will see.
For now Yunah is scheduled for twice a week therapy and daily exercises done by me. It was a crazy, busy day and so I just took one picture (http://www.k9cushings.com/forum/album.php?albumid=61&pictureid=3104) of Yunah, in the treadmill. I promise that from Thursday on, our next appointment, there will be lots of pictures and videos of Yunah on the treadmill, swimming and getting her massages…:D

Wow! What an amazing program. Can I join??!!;):)
Poor sad Yunah-in the picture.:( I bet she will have a much different look in a couple of weeks.:D
Go Sas!! GO YUNAH!!!:D:D:):)

That is amazing. I wish I could join too!!!!! I can't believe how thorough the program is.
Sas, what is the technique to relax the tail muscles? I remember reading somewhere about that really helped make a pup feel so much better. We don't realize how much tension those muscles have.
It sounds like Yunah is in really good hands and I know she will be fit as a fiddle in no time. Wait, you probably wonder, why we think a fiddle could be fit:rolleyes::rolleyes: Just an old expression meaning up and about in no time:D:D:D:D

Okay, today Yunah had her first real session of hydrotherapy :D I made a small compilation of the different things she did today... First, she starts with the under-water-treadmill, then she finally get's her very first time in the pool :D Monique is really sweet with the dogs and she takes her time so Yunah can adjust to this new experience :) As you will see, Yunah was a bit uneasy at first but then in the next clip you can see she's really starting to enjoy herself, going after her ball ;) What you guys can't understand, are the words Monique is saying in that clip "wat een heerlijk hondje, joh". Meaning, "Gosh, what a delightful dog she is" :D And after the swimming, it ended with a warm water massage...there's just a picture of that but still, you can see what is happening :)
http://youtu.be/3uvNrHk1EGc
It was a very fun afternoon, hard work, but fun :) Yunah has been walking, swimming and getting massages for an hour! Next appointment is this Saturday!
Saskia and Yunah :)
WOW!!!!! She liked swimming after the ball. It was so interesting how the therapist first held Yunah in the pool and then in a blink of an eye, she is swimming back and forth.
She did well on the treadmill too.

Hi Sas,
Yunah seems to be doing so well in her therapy. We had many working
K-9's that developed spondylosis and other degernative illnesses. You may want to check with you therapist on this home techinique for strengthing the core and it is a good easy stability exercise that can be done at home if your up to it.
Get a "boogie board" foam surf board that will fit in the bath tub. Put it in the tub without water at first. Have Yunah stand on board and get used to it. Give treats or ball, as she is used to with Physical Therapy. Then, slowly increase water level to just inches so Yunah has to balance and compensate just a bit. As the water level goes up it is amazing what they can acomplish. I am sure you have seen "surfing dogs". With the board being in the enclosed tub it is pretty safe as long as the water lever is low enough so the board can still touch if Yunah's balance gets off balance and she does not fall.
Surfs Up!

Rene,
that you found the time and the "mood" to come here and post, you are so amazing through everything :)
I sure will talk with Yunah's therapist about it, it sounds like a lot of fun. But unfortunately I do not have a bathtub at home...so Yunah won't be able to do this at home... ( I bet she wished she could :D ) But tommorow is therapy time again and I will make sure to tell Monique about it, thanks!
All our best and hugs,

Well, we did have our hydrotherapy session again today...and it was so much fun for Yunah as this video will show you... http://youtu.be/eUYZFpL3rRQ.
On the other hand, it is not going all that well, as you can see on this video http://youtu.be/svRap3oUW4U
After deliberation with Yunah's orthopedic surgeon, watching the close up video images, they now think that Yunah is experiencing problems from the calcified ligament. As you can see in the video, she walks with a somewhat hunched back, her hindlegs are moving irregular, she drags her nails on the floor more often, etc...all neurological problems. Her muscles aren't even that bad, in fact, she has a real nice musclemass, definately not very weak so that's not the cause for her problems.
This changes things a bit and will definately affect Yunah's future as a working dog. The incredable thing is, that the hydrotherapy lady, Monique, works together with an American vet, Linda Boggie DVM. Once a week, she comes to the hydrotherapy centre to give acupuncture treatments. The orthopedic surgeon and Monique, now want Linda to have a look at Yunah. So, in 2 weeks I will be sitting with a vet from the USA, talking about Yunah :) After she finished her veterinary study, she extensively studied veterinary acupuncture and chinese herbs with, amongst other ways, an 88th generation Daoist priest :) A very interesting lady and aparently worldfamous for her work and studies, giving lectures and seminars all over the world. And this lady, can be found in the back corner of this small country  Lucky me :D
That crazy little thing called love...brought her here ;)
Anyway, I am now placing my hope in her, hoping she can give Yunah some relief and keep her working and fit for some more time.
Saskia and Yunah :)
I sure wish I could do some disco zwemmen:):):) Koko would also love it!!!!
Not happy to hear about the ligament though and I hope Yunah can get some relief with the acupunture. You are lucky indeed to have these resources.:):):) It is such a small world, is it not?
Disco zwimmen for everyone!!!!!!!!!! We would need a really, really big pool!!!!!!
Hugs,
Addy

09-24-2011, 09:54 AM
Yehaaawwwww...disco zwemmen for all, wouldn't that be fun :D Next Tuesday it's swimming again and that following Tuesday (October 4th) I will see Linda. Hope she has something to offer. Otherwise we will have to go to Utrecht University Veterinary Hospital for an MRI and see if there are any surgical options... But they are not that hopeful. For one it's very close to the spinal cord and secondly, it's a calcified ligamant and you can't remove a ligament just like that. The ligament is there for stability and if it needs to be removed (and if it can be removed), you'll have to make a construction with screws and pins and such to stabilize the last vertebra and the sacrum. So we'll see what the future brings...
And now I'll go looking for a really really large pool so we can all go disco zwemmen :p
Sas and Yunah :)

Today we went to see Linda Boggie, the American DVM and veterinary acupuncturist. She's a very lovely lady and so gentle with her patients :) It's very difficult to describe what happened and what she had to say... Mainly because I am not familiar at all with terms like "obstructed chi", "cold liver" and...something....about the spleen :) But some things really made sense. For example, since a week or three, Yunah has decided to curl up underneath my duvet, something she has never done and never wanted in the past 4.5 years she is living with me. But recently she seems to be cold quite often and really is looking for warmth. Next thing I know, Linda is telling me Yunah's "liver is cold" (not to be taken litterally, I suppose ;)) So eventhough that term doesn't really make sense to me...it makes sense in the sense that Yunah definately has developped a need for warmth, something she never had before. One other remarkable thing (nothing to do with acupuncture at all) is that Yunah walks with an ambled gait, something dogs will do when they have backproblems. But not only does she walk with an ambled gait, she also swims that way  Something neither the hydrotherapy lady, neither the orthopedic surgeon nor Linda had ever seen before... Pretty remarkable :D
Anyway...on to the needles ;) Yunah was very relaxed through all of it and let Linda place the needles while almost faling asleep with her head resting on my arm :) Once all needles were placed, Yunah laid down and within minutes she fell fast asleep...for 30 minutes straight! After those 30 minutes, she woke up, got up, had a good shake and needles were flying through the room :p
We were also given a jar of Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang, a Chinese herb mixture that has anti inflammatory and pain reducing capacities. And the addition of cinnamon helps with "warmth"...to be given twice daily with her meals.
It's all very fascinating but at the same time very mind boggling :) For now Yunah is sound asleep and very relaxed...Saturday its disco zwemmen again ;)
I have added some pictures of Yunah with the needles...:D
Saskia and Yunah :)
Hi Sas,
There is a good book, Four Paws, Five Directions that explains all the Yin and Yang and heat, cold, stagnation, etc. Certain foods are even considered hot or cold or neutral which is how Zoe ended up on turkey;) Chicken was a hot food and Zoe was hot when we first visited the holistic vet whom also practiced Chinese medicine.
I don't remember all of it now.
I am amazed that Yunah fell asleep durring acupuncture. Makes me want to have a session:D I hope it helps her.
I am off to look at your photos of needles flying!!!!

Things really continue to amaze me :) After Linda had "diagnosed" Yunah's "liver stream" (or something) to be cold, she gave Yunah some herbs and added cinnamon, since cinnamon is a "warm" food. Well, within 24 hours, Yunah stopped sleeping under the duvet, she even stopped sleeping on the bed all together (her regular place) and moved to the cold floor  And next thing I know, Yunah has a hotspot, something she never had before (at the exact same place as where her liver is located, except it's on the outside of her body of course) Of course I called Linda and she said that since Yunah had been really very "cold", she had given her a good dose of the cinnamon but apparently it had been a bit too much because now Yunah was "hot".... :p Geezzzz, can't believe it, so strange :) Linda said the acupuncture had improved her circulation more then she had expected... So now we are off the Chinese herbs to let Yunah "cool down" again :D
But apart from everything else, Yunah still loves her job. Today I was going to make macaroni, so I needed macaroni and a can of concentrated tomatoes from a drawer, some leek from the fridge and a pan from one of the other drawers... And of course, one Yunah to complete it all ;)
http://youtu.be/5YOFU-R4tAU

I'm going to try to consume lots of cinnamon myself, see if it helps with the nasty cold weather we have here and if it helps me stay warm ;)

And thank you for the kind words. You can see why everyone says that Yunah would be unhappy if she couldn't do her job anymore, she just loves it! So we will try anything in our power to keep her going, even if she can work perhaps 75 or only 50% of her usual work, she was made to "please" :)
Say hello to Mike from me and a big hug for Penny and yourself,

Hi Sas,
I must be related to Cindy because watching Yunah work brings tears to my eyes too. She is truly amazing and I only wish I was that enthusiastic at work. The hair is still standing up on my arms after watching the Il Volo video. What incredible voices they have and what is wrong with the stupid people in that audience. They deserved a standing ovation for that flawless performance. I've watched both videos three times and am going back for more. I think I'll try to find a video for the song Kathy mentioned.

Yunah's hydrotherapy is slowly changing into more and more hard work :) Her hind muscles are in good shape and now it's time to concentrate on other areas. On the treadmill and during swimming, Yunah ('s back) is in a horizontal position. But in real life, during daily activities, she often is in a more "stretched upward" position. For example, when she hands me something, she has her hindlegs on the floor but her frontlegs are on a higher level on my footrest...stretching her neck upward to hand me the item (a more diagonal position). So the hydrotherapist is now working om that specific position to strenghten the muscles needed for this position. She does this by pushing Yunah's hind end down so Yunah's position changes from horizontal to somewhat diagonal...stretching her neck upward to keep her head above water...same position as when she hands me something...
As you can see, hydrotherapy is now becoming really hard work for poor yunah :D Thankfully, there also is always time to "just swim" without the hard excersises ;)

Today the decission has been made that Yunah will go to the Veterinary Faculty of the University in Utrecht to have a MRI done. She's not improving and it's time to decide wether she still has a future as a Service Dog or not. She still will have a good life as a petdog but as far as work goes, that's a real big question at this moemnt. The only way to get 100% clarity is through MRI imaging. We know she has the calcified ligament that's very close to or even touching her spinal cord. But now we need to find out how it is exactly located and what it is doing and if there is a possible surgical solution or not. They want to try and see if they can fit Yunah in next week... It's going to be a crucial exam, Yunah's working future will be decided on it. Keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome...

Oh Saskia, even though I have not been posting very much, I have been following every single one of your updates and hoping each time for good news. I have been so worried about Yunah's ability to continue as a service dog...I think that is the real reason why it has been hard for me to find the words to post. I just did not want to give voice to my fears. But it is time for me now to set aside my cowardly ways and to speak up -- to send your precious girl (and you!) my wishes for the best possible outcome. Of course, her health is the most important issue. And as you say, no matter what, her life is and always will remain filled with love and value.
So I will trust that what is meant to be will be. Today and always.
Sending tons of hugs across the miles, and waiting anxiously for news.

Oh Sas, I am so very sorry she is not improving. Is there any improvement at all, it could be just that it is going to take a very long time. I know Yunah is one tough little girl, but not being able to "do her job" has always made her a bit depressed - so I am hoping the MRI reveals some positive changes.

Thanks all! :) Sorry for not responding sooner but I was "busy" celebrating my 50th birthday this past weekend :D :D :D
I am not sure yet when our appointment will be. The clinic in Wageningen (where Yunah's orthopedic surgeon is located) said they will make it an "emergency" appointment and that Yunah was going to be scheduled this week. But I haven't actually heard yet...but fully expecting it to be this week. The neurologist, working in the Wageningen clinic, is also working at the neurology department in Utrecht, so there are short "lines of communication" and that will certainly help ;) The reason Yunah will have the MRI done is that she not only isn't improving, she is actually getting worse, showing more signs of compression of the spinal cord. (and again, most likely due to the already excisting calcified ligament) She yelps more often with certain movements, she limps more and more often, and it's becoming more difficult for her to pass her stools...other then that she is constantly tired, looking somewhat "sad", her hindquarter stay rather "weak and wobbly" and she still continues to walk with an ample gait. All in all, more then enough reasons to explore her lower back more detailed through a MRI.
Soon as I know more, I will let you know :)

I am as good as convinced that this will be the end of Yunah's working career but that's okay. Over the past weeks I have come to terms with this outcome and the possible consequences.
I posted 2 pictures in Yunah's album...of Yunah's mom :D A friend of mine went to visit the woman that owns Yunah's mother and took some pictures of her for me. And it's almost creepy how simular both dogs are, eventhough they do not physically look alike. Yunah's mom a real Labrador and Yunah looking nothing like a Labrador. But at the same time they are so simular. The way they behave, their attitude, the look on both faces, the way Yunah's mom is laying in the sun...it's like seeing Yunah :) My friend who went there said it was like seeing Yunah the entire time...that same serious look, that same calm demeanor, the same devotion...Yunah in a Labrador disguise :D

Hi Saskia,
I am so sorry I missed your birthday. You know what they say..... better late than never. :D:p:D. Happy Birthday, young lady!
I don't want to be contrary but I'm going to pray that your instincts fail you this time and that Yunah will be able to continue to do what she loves best....working with you. No matter what happens, she is golden and she is loved by all of us.
Now off to see Yunah's mama.
Hugs to you both,

Susan, there are all kinds of scenario's possible...depending on the outcome of several things. If Yunah will be declared "unfit to work" then I have to apply all over again for a service dog with my healthinsurance. They can decide to give me another and they can decide to not give me another, that's the first hurdle I will have to take. If they will deny me another service dog, Yunah will stay with me forever. But if they will decide to give me another service dog, Yunah will go live somewhere else..but it will be the best place ever for her :) There are multiple reasons why Yunah would have to go live somewhere else...IF I get another service dog. First of all, for Yunah self. She would be so unhappy having another dog doing "her" job...she would not be able to relax and slow down with her painfull back..and that is what she will need. But for as long as Yunah will live with me, she will find it her duty to "work". That's her nature... But also, I cannot financially afford having 2 dogs. And Yunah will cost money with her back problems...no doubt. I would feel horrible if I couldn't provide her with the best care ever. But trust me, if I didn't think that Yunah would go somewhere where she would have a perfect life, I would not let her go. I wouldn't even apply for a new service dog and just let Yunah stay with me. But that's all in the future and nothing in the future is sure, right now I have to wait what the MRI will tell us about Yunah's backproblems...

Thanks all! :) The waiting still continues... Didn't receive the MRI results last Friday so now I have to wait at least untill Tuesday, Yunah's orthopedic (and also neuro) surgeon doesn't work on Mondays :)
Yes, it's a wonderfull and extremely well equipt hospital and very kind personel as well :) The Netherlands is just a small country and therefore we have just one Veterinary University but they are absolutely one of the very best...within Europe at least and ranked number 12 in the entire world, not bad heh? ;)
We have the general vet practises (they all have their own pharmacy, we don't have what most of you seem to have, that you can get peoples med or cheaper meds for your pet at any other pharmacy) and when your pet has a more specific problem, the gen. vet will send you to see a specialist...this is common practise. And when the specialist feels the problem is too complicated for him/her or the pet needs more then he/she can offer (regarding monitoring, surgery, equipment, etc...) you go to the Veterinary University. Just as it is common practise that over 85% of all pets here have healthinsurance and therefore treatment is often available to most pets. Even the expensive treatments, like for example Yunah's MRI. The healthinsurance doesn't use the principle of exclusion and so everything is being paid for (except for the 19% of each bill you have to pay yourself) And also, you have a healthinsurance card (like a creditcard...sort off) and with this card, you don't have to pay upfront. The hospital (or vet) sends the bill to the healthinsurance company and they pay the entire hospital/vet bill and then you get send a bill for 19% of the total amount. Which is a wonderful way since it would have been impossible for me to pay the entire 1200 euro for the MRI and than afterwards get the money back from the healthinsurance company. Now I just have to pay 228 euro...
So all in all, I am extremely pleased with how things are especially after learning how different it can be elsewhere :)
Have a wonderful Sunday all..
Sas and Yunah :)

The MRI results are in and I have spoken with Yunah's orthopedic (and neuro) surgeon. Apart from the calcified ligament (of which we already knew because of the x-rays) they have found a spinal disc herniation...between her 7th lumbar vertebra and the sacrum, same level as the calcification. Due to the herniated disk, Yunah is suffering from what is known as Cauda Equina Syndrome or Degenerative Lumbosacral Stenosis.
And this diagnosis means the end of Yunah's working career...
Eventhough I was fully expecting this, the news has hit me very hard. And I would like to ask you all (and I know you all will understand) to not ask me about things like "Will you keep Yunah", "what will you do now"...etc. I know these are important questions and I am working on the answers but at this moment, I am not capable to adress such questions, not yet...
I do promiss to answer those and every other question you may have...somewhere down the road, just not right now :)

You guys are the best, thanks :D
Time for an update... Lots has happened in the past couple of days. Originally I was going to try and see if Yunah would be able to adapt to a new home, new environment and it was going to be the best place ever (on paper). Of course we would have to see and try if it would work and if it wouldn't work, I would take Yunah back and let her stay with me for ever after. I would not try it more than this one time. If it would work, if Yunah would be happy at her new home, that would be great. Yunah would have a wonderful new home and I would be able to get a new service dog. If it wouldn't work, Yunah would stay with me for the rest of her life and I would give up on wanting another service dog...that was the plan.
Last Thursday, I had an apointment with my own general vet to talk things through, to go over the MRI results again, talk about painmanagement, etc.
Well, this conversation changed everything... It seemed I had missed quite some information in the original call with the orthopedic surgeon. Apart from the problems in the L7 - sacrum area, Yunah also has degenerative disk disease at level L4 - L5 meaning she could develop a herniated spinal disk in that area at any time, due to a movement she makes. The herniated spinal disk at the L7 - sacrum area can "burst" into her spinal cord canal at any given time due to a movement she makes. If this happens, there are only 2 options, get her to the University of Utrecht asap for emergency neurosurgery or humanely euthanise her. Apart from this "more bad news" that sort of blew me away...he told me Yunah was in considerate pain and needed to start painmedication right away. With all her bad reactions to previous pain medication, we searched for a choice that would possible not cause her to react. (she started with her first dose yesterday evening and so far, she hasn't show any reaction that suggests that she cannot tolerate this medication, thankfully...to be safe, we started at a dose for a dog that weighs 8 kilo instead of the 13 kilos Yunah is weighing)
With all this new information, it has of course become impossible for me to rehome Yunah, no matter how good the place will be. So she will stay with me for how long is given to her...and me. No new service dog for me...doesn't seem that important anymore.
Saskia and Yunah :)

Oh Saskia, I have been holding my breath every time I check the forum, waiting to see what the situation will be for you and Yunah. Hoping, hoping, hoping. I have now read through your reply three times in order to make sure I understand it. It is hard to read through tears. But I've done it. And I will wipe away my tears and plan to be just as strong and brave as you and Yunah. Because you both deserve every ounce of strength and support that we can give you. And knowing our k9C family, it will be a TON of strength and support!!! Every minute of every hour of every day.
I do not want to pester you with unnecessary questions, but I am surely hoping that you will be able to manage your daily routine without the aid of a service dog. Perhaps it will be possible to receive some human aid throughout the course of each week? But whatever is needed, I know you will work things out with your resourcefulness and resilience.
Sending my love and healing energy to both you and to our precious girl. And my best wishes, always and always and always.

A week has passed since the diagnosis and again, a lot has happened :) As you know, my original plan was to rehome Yunah and see if she would be happy. If she would have been, I would have applied for another service dog. But due to the more grim situation then I originally believed it to be, I just couldn't rehome Yunah...she had to stay with me. That meant that I would not apply for another service dog due to financial reasons.
But then, something magical happened, something so incredable warm and loving... All sorts of people who are in my life, like my parents, the service dog foundation, friends, the family where Yunah was born, Yunah's foster family during her first year and half, etc...got together (on the internet) without me knowing it and they decided to donate me a new service dog and all costs that come with it so I can still have a working service dog and at the same time I can still afford the best care for Yunah  So I can start looking for another dog that would be a good match, passes the medical exam and has the character to become a service dog. I will look for a dog that needs rehoming or a rescue from abroad so apart from me being helped, I can also help a dog to a new and good life. Won't be easy and may take some time but I am sure I can find a dog for this task and train it :)
So this is how it will be, Yunah stays, gets the best care possible, I will go look for another dog and once I have found one, I will train it to be my next service dog. I pay all the expenses for Yunah, this group of angels that surrounds me, will pay all the costs for the new dog for as long as needed. Once Yunah is no longer here, I will take over the costs for the new dog :)
I don't know how I ever can thank all those people enough who give me this incredable oppertunity. The best way will be to find a dog that really needs a home and give that dog the most beautiful life it could have wished for :)

Today I took Yunah to our general vet, together with an urinesample, because she has troubles keeping her urine up. I first wanted to rule out a bladderinfection ofcourse but her urine looked great, no infection. Combined with her having difficulties to poo and her tail wagging only from the center to the left and back instead of the usual left - right wagging, Yunah is experiencing pressure on the nerve(s) controlling her tail, bowels and bladder...
So we will now try a laxative so Yunah can poo more easily (less pressure and pain) and once her painmedication is at the right level for her weigth, and she is on that for a week, hopefully the symptoms will resolve some.
On Yunah's website, I posted a picture of Yunah that was, to those who saw it, rather shocking. The change in her is...so very obvious. From my bright eyed, sparkling little girl to now this tired and burned out dog. I will post the picture here as well...not to shock you but to let you know where we stand, where Yunah stands, to make everything more...real. She's only 5 but looks like she's 15 orso...

Never a dull moment here :) Today was the most joyous day in a long time since the painmedication has now clearly started to kick in and Yunah was running, jumping, diving into the ditch, running some more...and was as happy as a dog can be :D This was the first time in a long time that I saw her like this again, I watched her with tears in my eyes :) Also the laxative is working and she now poo's again "smoothly", no straining and struggling...and even her tail was wagging left to right again, the whole 180 degrees :D :D
This is exactly what we hoped for, that the pain/anti inflammatory meds would make a difference and that it would also help alleviate the symptoms. I really don't like the NSAID's but they are really helping Yunah big time :)
And...there might be a AussieDoodle in my future :D A juvenile (delinquent) :p Nothing is certain yet, need to have the approval first for a new service dog but once that approval is here...the AussieDoodle is a real option :)
Will keep you all updated :)

Dasaquin
Adequan
tramadol
and Rimadyl if need
Love prayers and lots of hugsssssssssssssssssssssss:)

Hi Cindy,
I am so sorry to hear that Penny's having such a bad day today :(
Yunah is now, since a week, on Novacam (the cheaper version of Metacam) and just as the vet told me, it would take a week before the meds would work fully...and it did :) And also, he "warned" me extensively not to stop the meds. The latest research shows that the "conservative" approach (only giving meds when the dog is in pain) is counterproductive. When a daily level of the meds is maintained, dogs seem to have much less periodes of a lot more pain and when they do, the increased pain is easier and faster controlled.
I don't know if you ever tried Previcox (http://previcox.us.merial.com/) with Penny. It would have my preference over Novacam but unfortunately Yunah cannot tolerate it. It's also a NSAID but a bit "friendlier" then for example Rimadyl and Metacam. And according to Yunah's orthopedic specialist, very effective for "skeletal" pain and most dogs tolerate it better then the forementiond NSAID's.
So perhaps you could start trying a daily dose of Rimadyl (after discussing it with your vet) with Penny following the latest "protocol" according to my vet. Start at the dose needed to control the pain and once stable you could try lowering it slowly to a level where Penny still has painrelief. That's the plan with Yunah as well. But I know already, if a lower dose doesn't do it for her, I won't have any problem putting her back on the normal dose....with all possible riksk for side effects. I rather have her 3 months happy and painfree, running and jumping, then have her another year without the joy she's experiencing now once again :)
All our best,
Saskia and Yunah :)

Hi Sas - Thanks for the infor -- will ask Pennys orthopedic about that med - Penny is on a low dose of Rimadyl now but today vet said to increase it and I did this AM and this PM -- I have to say just increasing it she is bouncing tonight -- she has a small comforter over her orthopedic bed and she just dug and dug and bounced and bounced!! Yup now tomorrow she wont be able to move:D As we are speaking she just came down the stairs - jumped up on the couch in the basement family room and is bouncing like its a trampoline!! So the increased dose is working for sure -- and now shes in her other bed going crazy!! like I said now tomorrow she will be sore:eek: but its so nice to see her happy - I know the Rimadyl isnt great for them but I have come to the conclusion that i want to see her able to get around and be happy now - I cant worry about the future - her hind legs are still weak for sure prob from the Cushings but she is managing for sure:)

Hi Sas-
I don't know how the "mechanics" work with dogs but I do know that when two-footed people need to take strong pain medication it has a tendency to jam things up. You counter it with more fiber, more fruit and/or stool softeners. I'm sure you're way ahead of me on this, just thought it wouldn't hurt to toss it in.
Labradoodle, huh? That was what I first thought I wanted and then I learned that they START at about 35 lbs...........way above my upper limit of 20lbs.

No, not a LabraDoodle...an AussieDoodle :) An Australian Shepard x Poodle cross.... Miss Ella crossed with Palmer, well kind of :p In this AussieDoodle's case it was a Standard Poodle with an Australian Shepard :)
And with the laxative Yunah gets, her stools are smooth sailing for her, for now ;)

Sas,
How wonderful for Yunah to be a dog again running and playing like before. :D:):p
I know someone with an AussiePoo, her name is Cora--very cute. She walks just like a poodle, has the fluffy fur/hair. This one is a red merle coloring. Ella and her have a good time together. Cora is a little younger than Ella, but just as big and I am sure will be bigger.:)
Enjoy Yunah and good luck with the AussiePoo.:)
Also, thank you for the advice with Ella. I know she understands what "off" means she just likes to live on the edge. We taught Maddie the speak and quiet; we even taught her to whisper--so funny and cute. People were amazed she could do the whisper.:D

Today, I had that talk with the vet that noone wants to have but yet we do have to have it. Since yesterday, Yunah has lost all controll of her bladderfunction and when I stroke her back or side, she is showing me her teeth, that's how much pain she is in...being on Novacam. So, we had that talk...about quality of life, dogworthy life and what could be done and if it would lead to something. Well, apart from stuffing her full with drugs, there's nothing that can be done that will lead to something. And that's not my idea of a good, dog worthy life. So for now, they gave her a considerable dose of Prednison and painmedication to make sure she is comfortable, for now. And I will take this time to spent it with Yunah, to take longs walks on my lap, wrapped up in her blanket, just be together and say our goodbye's...
In 24 till 72 hours, depending how soon the meds will stop working, I will let Yunah go...

Saskia,
It has been a long time since I have been here regularly, well signed in anyway, and I came for Terri and Corky and now I come for you...I have been keeping my eye on you on and off during that time, but missed the most recent report on Yunah until now.
I am choked up with emotion, and the words fail to come, for all that you and Yunah mean to me and how much I hurt with you. You were such a tremendous support to me, and even through all the connections we tried, and finally made, by phone....all the videos and stories about wonderful Yunah....and all the support and comfort you gave me with both Bailey and Scooter.
Saskia, I wish I knew what to say...how to bring you some comfort. Please know the tremendous sorrow I have in my heart, and that although land may separate us, I am always with you.
Wishing you so much peace and love and comfort in the coming days, please give Yunah a sweet kiss and hug for me, and I will be looking up at the pawprints in the stars and praying that Yunah is gently lead to them when her time comes.
Sending you many many hugs and much love,

Dearest Saska,
Cherish these moments, break all the rules, do those special things together, give her all the things she loves. Im so glad we did this with my little girl her last few days.
Snoops last morining we decided to sleep in together, then breakfast and just a wonderful morining in bed just lounging around cuddling, belly rubs, playing. She didnt have a care in the world. When we got up and got ready to go the the vet recheck that is when things came on sudden and we lost her. I am so grateful for that morining!
Lean into Yunah ears and tell her for Snoopie, "Thank You Yunah you made Snoopies last few weeks so much better." It was because of her we got the idea of the goggles, then the mask. Without them she would not have been able to go outside with her eyes the way they were and to do her wabbit hunting, which is what she lived for. That is what kept her going for as so long as she did, to have somethig to look foward too!
Thank You Yunah for helping Snoopie and Saska and all you do. We love you.

Oh, Sas,
I am crying with you. My heart is breaking. You were the best Mom in the world and Yunah was the best dog ever. If I could, I would take you back in time and give you a million more years together. But you will be together in each other's hearts until you meet again someday at the Rainbow Bridge. All my love and healing energy goes out to you at this time and please feel my arms around you from across the ocean.
To Yunah: We will all miss you, sweet princess. You taught us so much about our "kids" and ourselves. My heart feels the pain of losing you but I hope that soon I will be able to go back and read all the wonderful stories and see all the funny videos you blessed us with and that I will be able to smile once again. You have always been an angel on earth and now heaven has the honor of receiving you as an angel there. But please watch over your Mom and give her strength, as you always have, as she goes through this very sad time. And now run free, precious princess, with all your new friends through the fields of heaven with the sun to warm you and gentle breezes to help you on your way. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day here and I will be thankful for knowing you and your Mom. Until we all meet at the Rainbow Bridge, godspeed and God bless.

My heart is breaking for you, Saskia. I was totally unprepared for this news, which I learned about with the posting of "Yunah's Leven" and "Even geen woorden meer" - such beautiful tributes you created for her. The images of her and of the two of you together convey more than words ever could. She was so clearly the embodiment of love.
Yunah, rest in peace, little one. You were dearly, dearly loved and will be sorely missed.

Everytime I came here to post…and I read all the words that you all left behind, I had to leave again without being able to post. It’s beyond anything I have ever experienced…so many members, friends…so much kindness, warmth and love…so many overwhelming feelings.
I will not ever find the words to express what this incredibly special group of people means to me. I usually don’t lack self esteem or confidence but the past couple of days I have truly been wondering how come I deserve this much kindness and love. And I still can’t figure it out…nothing I did justifies all those beautiful things you said. So please accept my humble gratitude for all your heartfelt words.
Here, where I live, it’s the same…people come from everywhere, bringing me food, flowers, cards, making me coffee, wiping my tears, sitting with me, lighting candles…and I cannot understand why I should deserve this. All I did was love this little doggy…and the ones before her. And that was the easiest thing I ever had to do….love my pets. All the warm and wonderful reactions are probably more confusing to me then Yunah’s passing… Does that make sense? Probably not...
I made a short movie, trying to show all of the aspects of Yunah life. Her being a dog, being my best friend, helping me, but also Yunah helping to make people aware of what a service dog is and means to it’s owner, all the children that loved her so dearly and overcame their fear for dogs thanks to her, Yunah’s social skills with other dogs, Yunah being the sunshine in the life of my elderly neighbour who we went to visit every weekend, and so much more.
And to give this K9 cush family a place in Yunah’s life as well, I added a picture of Terry and Yunah, when she and Peter visited me. It stands for all of you…since all of you played a huge an important part in her and my life.

Sas, the tribute is absolutely beautiful. I can honestly say that tears were streaming down my cheeks. It would be very difficult for anyone to capture the essence of such a special little girl in only 8 minutes, but you did that & more. It was so wonderful to see the joy that Yunah brought to everyone's faces, both young & old. Even though you say it's hard to understand all the care & concern you have received for simply loving your girl, I can understand it. We all love our pups, but I think it touches all of us very deeply when we see the deep bond that a special person & special pup shared.

No dry eyes here either. Sas, that is an absolutely beautiful tribute to your precious girl and there is no doubt in my mind that no matter how many times I view it through the years to come, I will always be moved to tears. Believe it or not, I share the wonder of how so much love can be shared by so many on this site. It remains a mystery as to how I can love and truly mourn the loss of a dog I've never had the pleasure to meet in person. Yunah was an extraordinary dog who I came to love and respect through an extraordinary human being, who I consider to be a dear friend.
Many hugs and much love.

You're killin' me, Sas.
What a beautiful tribute to Yunah. Such a cute puppy, such of a very shiny coat, and a graceful young lady.
I thank you for your kind note to us and I am oh, so glad to hear from you. I am glad you are receiving support there as well.
I feel honored to "know" you and Yunah. I remain so very sorry for your loss.

45 seconds into it I was crying like a baby. You caught the spirit of her life and you can just see the love in her eyes. I cried so hard for your loss and all I could think of was how much MORE than a dog Yunah was in your life. We have lost furbabies but Yunah was such a critical part of your life and so young it just tears me up thinking of how difficult this must be for you.
I am so relieved to hear that your friends are helping you out so much and feel the same way that your 'internet buddies' do. It consoles me to know they are there for you during what has to be a very sad time.
Sas, I can only thank you for sharing her with us over the years. We were all blessed. I send much love, healing thoughts and sincerest condolences. Love, Kim

Oh I am in tears also - what a wonderful celebration of her, her life and her eternal spirit. Saskia, you have touched so many lives in a very good way. I'll be back when I can see to write through my tears....

Dear Saska,
Your grace is overwhelming. In answer to your question, Courage is why you are loved.
Yet again, in your grief you have showed grace and courage with your last post and video tribute...when this should be your time of greiving. This is something I still have not acomplished as I still even cannot return to my little ones thread, when I do I cannot breath.
I do want you to ask you how are you, really? How are you getting through this without a service dog in such a tough time? How are your evenings before bed and awaking in the morining? How are you getting throug the day? How does your heart feel? All of this concerns me as I know I have lived with service dogs of sorts in a different form and understand the ovewhelming loss.
Of course, all the above questions really not meant to be answered. Please don't. Just asked to let you know, someone is thinking of you. Really.
Love,
Rene & Angel Snoopster

Okay, here I am again :) "Yunah" is back home again and for me, that's always the moment when things get better...the comforting thought she's back home again, with me, where she belongs is always the start of my healing.
Not a day has gone by without friends visiting me, bringing their dog(s) and adding some shine to my days :)
And today I got a phonecall from Serge, (I decided to get my next service dog from another trainingschool) that he will be coming to visit, this Friday, and he will be bringing a Standard Poodle for me to meet... The AussieDoodle was too young, only 6 months and that would mean I would have to wait too long before I have a working dog again. So, with Yunah back home again and Serge coming with a possible candidate for me, things are getting better :)

I just got of the phone with Serge again, the appointment that was scheduled for this coming Friday unfortunately had to be canceled and is re-scheduled for next week, Wednesday. Also, the possible candidate has changed. Did he first suggested a Standard Poodle, he now thinks he has a really wonderful dog for me (smaller in size, what I want so badly), Whina, a (smaller then average) Labradoodle. A gorgeous girl of a about a year old :-) I made a new photo album so I can show you the possible candidates...untill I know for certain which one it will be...
And I also think that Yunah's thread, should end here. My precious black pearl...deserves her own thread...as does the new service dog deserves it's own thread.
With Cukie and Sogno, she will always be right here...
Saskia and for one final time, Yunah :)
