A fellow rescuer and very good friend, Cathy, in Utah rescued a beautiful dog from a high kill shelter. She was such a sad case, scrunched up in the corner of her cell, wanting nothing to do with anybody. Her fate had been sealed and Cathy couldn't leave her there to die. Sometimes dogs shut down in shelters but when you get them home, they become a different dog but not Olive. She remained afraid of human contact in her foster home, wanting nothing to do with her foster family. Cathy knew she was in for a long rehabilitation. To try to get her used to people, Cathy took her to an adoption event, where she laid huddled up against the expen. Cathy was busy answering questions about other dogs when she looked over and saw a little boy in the expen with Olive and she couldn't believe what she saw. They had connected and for the first time, Olive was actually interacting with a human. Cathy explained to the boy's mother that Olive had a long way to go before being ready for adoption but mom wouldn't take no for an answer. After hearing Olive's sad story and seeing the immediate bond she had with her son, she was even more convinced that Olive was going to be part of their family. Needless to say, Olive left with her new family that day and Cathy stood there waving goodbye with tears running down her face.

We should never underestimate the power of love, and the innocence of a child. In only a few days, the love of a child transformed a semi-feral dog who was afraid of human contact, into a loving, happy, pet who absolutely adores her boy. This love story is nothing short of a miracle and I cry every time I look at these pictures.

Get me a tissue.
What a sweet and heart warming story. The look of a dog huddled up in a cage and fearful is one of the most heartbreaking sights. Somehow Olive just had a connection with the boy...such a happy ending. Your friend Cathy is a hero for not leaving Olive in the shelter to die and now this dog has a new happy life! Thanks for sharing!! The photos are amazing...you can see these two are more than best friends. Olive looks so happy!

Oh my...you can see the connection in their faces. Olive looks at her boy with total absorption and adoration - as if she had been waiting for him to appear all her life. In the scheme of my beliefs, I see a connection that goes back much farther than this time - I see two old Souls who have known each other for ages once again reunited, together as they have been through all time, once again fulfilling the needs in each as no other ever could. Just beautiful.

Thank you, Glynda, for sharing Olive and her boy's story.

I really needed a cheery story today, and this sure fits the bill!!!!!!!

What a wonderful, wonderful twist of fate. I don't see how anybody could view those photos with dry eyes...:o :)

Thanks so much Glynda for sharing this!!!!!!!!!!! It made my day.

Maybe this "pup" missed her "kids" and was so sad as well. I know our Cailey Bear was very much like this dog (in a high kill shelter and scheduled to be put down immediately) and it took quite a while for her to come around; but she did.

Les, I think you could be right about that as there is really no other explanation for the instant bond that obliterated Olive's anxiety and fears. Hundreds of people had visited Cathy's booth that day and because Olive is such a gorgeous girl, she got lots of attention; however, she never engaged....until this little boy was lifted over the expen by his mom, without permission. Olive had never shown aggression toward people but nobody, especially a child, had ever knelt down and got in her face and jabbered away like she knew what he was saying. Cathy's first reaction was "oh my God" and that fear almost immediately turned to utter and tearful amazement as she saw how gentle and attentive Olive was with this child. For lack of better words, it was a mind blowing moment. I'm not the only one who truly believes that Olive knew what that little boy was telling her. It's a small picture, but I thought you might enjoy seeing the first moments between Olive and her boy.
