Hi, all! I have not been here in a couple years. I have been keeping in touch with Sharon (ventilate) and she encouraged me to post an update on Molly.

As a reminder for those who may have forgotten us, Molly was diagnosed with Cushings in early 2006. She spiraled out of control quickly and a trip to Texas A&M detected a macroadenoma. She stayed at A&M for a month receiving radiation. A few months later we moved to South Carolina leaving our beloved vet behind.

Molly is still with us. We have found fantastic vets here in Greenville, SC as well. We still keep in touch with our very favorite vet in Fort Worth. Molly has aged quite a bit (although she is only 8.5). She has been very stable since we moved, but over the summer she started having strange "episodes". She would not want to eat (a beagle with Cushings should definitely want to eat!), she would just seem off some days, etc. Her IMS recommended an MRI to see if she was having mini-strokes so we would stop chasing other things. The MRI showed brain inflammation (a form of menengitis) and large tumors in her ear canals (internally). Up to this point Molly had not shown any specific discomfort with her ears, so we had no reason to suspect anything there. The vets now think the tumors are putting pressure on her brain and causing these episodes on occasion.

Of course, with all that Molly has been through, we do not want to do too much more to her. The only way they can determine the severity of the tumors is to do major surgery and we have decided she has had enough poking and prodding. Her vet is in complete agreement and believes it's time to just keep Molly comfortable. She still doesn't show obvious signs of pain, but some days she shakes her head a bit and might hold one ear down.

Otherwise, she is eating great, is perky and wagging her tail and seems very happy. She does not have the stamina she used to have, but is still a very sweet and special girl. All the vets and techs at our specialist clinic know her well and always love seeing her. We're pleased with how well her Cushing's has stayed controlled since the radiation. However, we do believe the radiation caused the tumors. No way to prove that though.

Her brother Duke (non-Cushings) has injured his back and has a bulging disk. He is going through the pre-surgery stuff (CT scan, eval, etc.) and will be having surgery in the next couple weeks. Otherwise he is doing well, too.

We are enjoying South Carolina and are very thankful we've found such good vets here, too. I hope all of you "oldies" are doing well and I hope all the "newbies" are finding this site to be as helpful and comforting as I did when I started this journey.

Sue, Sharon mentioned that Zoe had an episode at Christmas. Hope she has recovered (and you too) and that she continues to truck along. I was sad to hear about Sharon losing Nike. I feel like many of you are my family and your losses hurt me, too. But I know Nike has plenty of friends in doggie heaven and one day she can show Molly around up there. Hopefully not anytime soon though. :D

Happy New Year to you all!

- Brandi and Molly

Hi Brandi, I remember you and Molly from the old site and am so glad to see an update from you here! :) Such a mixed bag for Molly, while I am so sorry she is having all these issues, I am also glad she seems to be feeling OK and is still happy and hanging in....I hope you know what I mean!

I will be saying prayers for both Molly, and Duke too, and hoping for many more happy tail-wagging days ahead!

Lots of hugs, Beth, Bailey and always Scooter, and Allo and Pallie too!

Omigosh Brandi, it is wonderful to have you back here with us, although I am surely sorry to hear about the problems with both Molly and Duke. It seems like only yesterday that brave little Molly underwent her radiation treatment -- and what a joy it was for us all to witness her improvement afterwards. But I know that her road definitely held some rocks back then, and it sounds as if she's facing a big challenge right now. It is grand that you've rejoined us -- Thank you so much for this update, and now you'll have to STAY with us and keep letting us know how things are going for you all.

Welcome home!!! :) :) :)

Hi Brandi,

It is great to see you here and get an update on Molly. It would have been nicer to have better news but we take what we can and make do with the cards we are dealt. Some of the oldies, Buddy included, have made the journey to the bridge over the last year or two.

Anyway nice to "see" you again.

Brandi! So good to hear from you. I remember your story because you were going thru your saga when my Haley was first diagnosed. I was amazed at everything you did for dear Molly... wonderful story.

Haley turned 16 in December and she is very frail but kicking. So glad you found us and took the time to fill us in. Big hugs from me and mine. Kim

Ohmigosh - it's Brandi and Molly and Duke. It's so good to hear from you again. I've often wondered how Molly was doing. Jenny's right. Old dogs have some problems but we must learn to enjoy what time we have left with them. And just how old is Duke now????

Yes, it sure sounds like Molly is going thru some similar experiences to Zoe's with her recent vestibular syndrome. I really struggled with watching Zo go thru it and whether or not it was time to stop putting her thru so much turmoil. But she has rebounded quite nicely, it seems. We had to leave her at the petsitters for almost 3 weeks while she was still in not such good shape. But we came home Tuesday to find her almost back to her old self. The balance issues may continue for awhile, I guess, but certainly she's way more steady on her feet now. With Molly, I guess it will be ongoing but even if it's a result of the radiation tx, you have to remember how much more time that that treatment gave you with Molly. And that's a good thing.:)

Good luck to Duke on his surgery and give them both great big super duper hugs and smoochies from Zoe and I. Are you still going to school??? Sue and Zo

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome back!

Duke is scheduled for surgery Monday. The surgeon said his bulging disk is mild to moderate. If he had not been showing signs of pain for 6 months in spite of rest and medication the surgeon said he would not do the surgery because it was not severe. But since he continues to be in pain he thinks surgery is the right thing. Keep your fingers and paws crossed for him!

Sue, Duke is 8 years old now. Molly will be 9 in April, but she looks like she's 15. Her ordeal has certainly aged her. But she is still wagging that tail and barking like crazy for her meals, so I think she is doing pretty good! Sorry to hear Zoe had such a hard time, but sooo glad she is bouncing back. These dogs are amazing, huh?

I am still in school. I don't think it will ever be over! Only 4 more classes. That's what I keep telling myself.

Take care, all. I will try not to be such a stranger!

Thanks for the positive vibes for Duke everyone. Just to keep you updated, Duke's surgery got postponed until tomorrow. There were too many emergencies today and the surgeon wants to make sure he has plenty of time. So keep those positive vibes coming. Duke will need them tomorrow.

Hi, everyone. Duke made it through surgery. The surgeon called about 1:30 and said he was waking up. He called about an hour later and said Duke was trying to stand up and walk around a bit so he was "quite tickled" to see him responding already. We will know more about what to expect with his recovery in the next couple days but so far things are looking good. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Thanks to all of you for your support. I'll keep you posted as we learn more. And FYI - school is starting back up for me at the end of the week, so it will be harder for me to get here. Don't panic if you haven't heard from us.

P.S. for anyone that is interested, my husband and I did some traveling this summer. We went to China and Alaska. I wrote blogs about each and they are available here.

Duke is home! :D:D:D:D:D

Except for the shaved back and staples you might never know he'd gone through anything this week. He is walking great, pottied from both places and is loving life! I can't believe how good he looks after back surgery. I would be lying around moaning and groaning and complaining! LOL! Dogs are so amazing.

Thanks again to all of you. Back to the books starting tonight, but I will try not to be a stranger.
