I don't know what to do now...will I know when it's time to say enough is enough?

Hi Sweetie,

To answer your question, I believe Lucy will let you know, if she is able. If not, then you will know in your heart whether she still has any fight left in her.

I can't let my mind go there just yet, tho. I am holding tight to the hope that this is a result of the meds and exhaustion from the surgery and being away from home.

Hang in there, as hard as I know it must be right now.
Hugs,
Leslie and the girls

Thank you so much to all of you...
I'm back, and Lucy's okay so far. By the time we got there I honestly thought she was in shock, but after about an hour, she looked more alert (they said they didn't even do anything except check her vitals and electrolytes, and they're all good.) The vet was concerned about why she wasn't getting up. She just doesn't want to get up now...but at least she's awake and looking around. She said she definitely has vision in her right eye, but said pupil in left eye was pinprick...She's going to talk to Dr. B and let him make the call on whether to do an MRI today and see what's going on upstairs or let her have another day...meanwhile the assistant called me and said she ate and drank for her and she was able to give her all her meds...except, of course, the dreaded acepromazine. I went in to give her a kiss before I left and i think she followed me with her left eye. I don't know what to think anymore...I'm just a walking zombie right now though. At least they wrapped her tail so she doesn't get any more poopie nasty on them...I spent a good part of the night cleaning and cutting shit from around her tail:(
That's what we do though, right?

Thank you all for hanging in there with me, and I think all your positive energy and prayers are working:)

Much Love,
Gina and Lucy

What a relief!! For now anyway. I've been refreshing my page every 1/2 hour or so to see if you posted. I'm so happy for you. I was hoping the wait meant she was okay. From what I read sounds like you need to go to bed! I know you don't know me but I've been keeping up with your story and was so worried when I read about your terrible night.

I saw your pictures of her and she is a beautiful doggy!

Gina,
What a horrible night you have had. If Lucy is improving without any treatment that is good isn't it. I am hopeful it was the acp which will wear off. Even people react differently to anesthetics. You have my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Gina,

I am so relieved that she is awake now and has taken some nourishment. ~~whew~~ Given a bit more time I bet she will be back on her feet, too. Thank goodness they didn't give her any more of the acepromazine!

Honey, you go take a nice long soak in a hot bubble bath; take the phone with you, a glass of that wine, and a good book if you're inclined. Take a little while to relax yourself, then get some sleep. Loving spirits surround you and LucyGoo, softly singing and praying, lending you their strength and hope. Neither of you will be alone for one second.

Hugs, prayers and healing thoughts continue,

Oh Gina,

I think I just heard the whole world sigh in relief for you and Lucy. We were really worried about you both, but, Thank The Lord and all other divine spirits, everything is ok so far, one day at a time...right...Sweet Gina :)

Now, let's focus on some positive things:

she ate and drank for her

she's awake and looking around

her vitals and electrolytes, and they're all good

She said she definitely has vision in her right eye

Way to go LucyGoo :D

Honey, this does not sound like a dog that is giving up, she is a fighter.

Now you my Dear, need to get some sleep/rest, or whatever will relax you.

FWIW, Gina, you are doing an excellent job with Lucy, I just wanted you to know that.

Gina,

Lucy has already proven she is a big time fighter. These dogs are just so tough. Personally, I don't see the reason to make Lucy endure an MRI too soon but maybe they have one. I hope they take it a little easy on the meds and just let her heal. And I hope you can get some rest and some sleep...goodness gracious you and Lucy have been through alot. I believe Lucy is going to come out of this just fine. She ain't even thinking about giving up so don't you even give it a thought either. A great football coach (Vince Lombardi) said, "fatigue makes cowards of us all." You are very, very tired physically, mentally and emotionally. Lucy's gonna be fine.

Hi Gina,

Y'know, although you'd think the acepromazine would have worn off by now, it really sounds like that could be the cause of this "setback" ...

For what it's worth, one of my dogs was given "ace" before an ultrasound exam (I'm not sure why, because he didn't really need to be sedated for ultrasounds) and he seemed fine until about an hour after we got back home. He then started to walk as if he was drunk and finally just fell over and couldn't get up. I called the Vet clinic in a panic and they said this could happen (would have been nice if they'd told me in advance that this could maybe happen, which they hadn't) with some dogs ... and that the full effect of the ace could take a while to show up and then take longer than usual to wear off.

I remember that he stayed "sedated" like that until the next day, and even then, it wore off very slowly.

My dog that this happened to was a strong, healthy dog, and he hadn't just had major surgery like your Lucy, so I'd say the "ace" could definitely be the culprit.

Please keep updating us as often as you can. We're pulling for your Lucy, big time and hoping that this is just a bump on the road to recovery.

(((hugs)))

Add my sigh to the piles and piles of them! It sounds much better,Gina! And really, you do need to take care of YOU and get some rest now...as best as you can, anyway. You'll do neither of you any good being an exhausted mom...and Lucy is in good hands with lots of strength and love surrounding her. And you have that too. So please, get some sleep, do whatever it is you do for yourself to unwind and relax a little. It is so hard to do, I know, but something you need to make time for now.

We'll be here waiting whenever you have a chance to get back to us. And Lucy will be just fine and need a rested mom for when she comes back home for good!

Lots of hugs to you both, Beth, Bailey and always Scooter

Hi guys...
Just wanted to thank you all so very, very much..I think of each and every one of you as really an angel helping Lucy and me.

I got a few hours nap, just passed out on the couch..but just thought of something somewhat amusing I wanted to share. I know there's a few of you out there from Southern CA...did you guys feel the earthquake last night? I'm in Hollywood/Los Feliz, and it was pretty strong here...lasted forever it seemed. When it happened I was lying on the floor petting Lucy...and I'm thinking...great...here comes the big one..what happens to my emergency plan now? I've got my dog recovering from brain surgery, blinded, and can't walk unassisted:eek: Oh, well...thank God it didn't come to that, but all that was going through my head:)

And Glynda, I laughed out loud at the "dufus" in your office comment:D

Thanks again everyone....I'll post again as soon as I hear.

Update from assistant...she needed help getting up, but she's walking around, (sort of), seems to have more vision on right side, but pupils are not reacting correctly to light. Something about the acepromazine might have done something to her blood pressure? doesn't it lower it? I wouldn't think it would cause a stroke. Why oh why did I give her that damed thing
Still waiting to hear from the vet in charge until Dr. B gets back tonight/tomorrow. He doesn't want to do the MRI today/tonight..thank god. I know that would be way too much for her.

Had a chat with this assistant, and she agrees with me that Lucy is fighting and really trying also, doesn't think she's in pain, and we just have to take it really hour by hour at this point. I just feel so bad leaving her there again..I know it's ridiculous and I had to leave her there, but I hope it doesn't hamper her recovery in any way. They think she should stay there until she's "out of the woods." Whatever that means:(

I'll post again when I hear from the vet..

Hey Gina,

Good to get an update. I am glad she is up and moving around for them.

And DO NOT, do you hear, beat yourself up over giving a med that they told you to give her!!! You did it with the very best of intentions...just as you have done all along...and there is NOT ONE THING wrong with that! She was having some of these issues before the med...I think more likely it is a combo of the med and she is still healing from this surgery...

I'm glad she is getting a break from having the MRI done.

And you are not being ridiculous. I told my vet after the last time I left Bailey there, I want him to install a webcam where you can go online and see your pup! It's that catch 22 of you can't give her the care she needs but you hate leaving her there...it's a horrible position to be in. But it is where she needs to be...and she knows you are with her. I do think they can sense that...their senses go way beyond our's and she can feel you right there in her heart. She is a fighter...and so are you! That bond cannot be broken by physical distance or space.

Hope you can get some more rest....still sending positive thoughts and hugs,
Beth,Bailey and always Scooter

Had to edit....read something backwards....overdue for my bedtime! Healing thoughts still coming though!!!

Thanks Beth...I love basset hounds...I used to have one years ago named Wilber..he was as stubborn as they come:)

Just heard from the vet...she said she was watching the assistant walk her and she can't believe how good she looks:D She thinks she looks better than yesterday:eek::D And if all goes well, they'll be sending her home with me tomorrow:eek::)
Dr. B will be in later tonight to evaulate the pupil thing and whatnot, but she sounded pretty happy...said the vision's improving too, so she's going to have the ophthalmologist check her out as well and try to get to the bottom of the pupil madness.

You all are the greatest:D:D I really believe Lucy's benefitiing from all this positive energy:) Thank you thank you thank you:)

Well, see, Gina, that explains it!!! Wilber was stubborn, it rubbed off on you and you rubbed off on Lucy and now Lucy is going to be just fine bc of it!!! All good things come from bassets (sshhhh...I don't want Bailey to hear me or he'll find out he's in charge!)....

THIS IS GREAT WONDERFUL HAPPY NEWS!!!:D:D:D

I am positive they will get to the bottom of the eye thing! It will be good to have the specialist see her.

Now, I have to go get rested bc I think we all are going to be having margaritas, or whatever drink you like best, when tomorrow comes! And I have A LOT of blending to do!!:D (BTW, do not let Louise near the blender...long story for another time....) Right now, it's LUCY TIME!!!

Hang in there!! I hope you can sleep better knowing she is doing better! And don't forget to ask about the webcam! ;)

Great to hear that Lucy is showing some significant improvement - particularly with her sight! It does sound like she was off her face on ACE! Maybe all the doses she had had sort of accumulated and combined with exhaustion and the relief at being at home she just crashed out!

I hope you are getting some much-needed and hard-earned rest yourself. I know first hand what a rough night with a sick dog is like although I didn't have an earthquake to contend with too! Your earthquake made the news here, BTW!

Hi everyone:)

Just got the morning update from Dr. B...and I quote..."She looks phenomenal.":D:D:D He said they had her up and walking outside, still showing some left-sided weakness, but he said she's "clearly visual." He wants to keep her one more day just to make sure. He thinks it was the ACE, in combination with just having her head cracked open. He also said when they were giving her the ACE it was IV, so the absorption is different orally, obviously, and it just was too much for her. So now I'm going to see her this afternoon:)

Thank you all so very, very much for all your good wishes...this is really the best place in the world:) I'll post again later after I see her...

PS....I also forgot to mention....they're studying the tissue from Lucy's tumor to improve cushings treatment in general for dogs...so it's not just for the surgery, it's to further study this horrific disease, and hopefully some day put an end to it. Dr. B is very interested in it because it's so common in dogs....Cedars-Sinai is interested because of the pituitary tumor, they want to further understand how it behaves, etc....so I was told. I'm just glad Lucy's improving...I really didn't want her to become a science project gone awry.

Hi all....
I hope I'm doing this right....glad I was able to get here through the transition. Lucy's home...she can barely walk, but she wants to eat ALL THE TIME:)
Of course, I've already f'ed up on her meds...gave her a whole cortisol acetate tablet tonight instead of a half.....don't think it's too big a deal, but e-mailed Dr. Bruyette to see if he wanted me to adjust tomorrow, and apologize for what an idiot I am. She's just on so many meds, I was just going down the list, handing pills to my boyfriend to put in meatballs of food...when I realized...AGHHH! It was too late....already put a whole pill in a meatball and it was downed. she's pretty out of it otherwise, and I notice her arthritis is back FIERCE! So I gave her a Cosequin tonight, and am going to continue with that....Dr. B doesn't want to give her NSAIDs yet, but we may have to later...it usually takes the Cosequin about a month to kick in, so we'll see.
I'm just happy that she's home....and I'm hoping every day will bring improvements......
Thanks to all of you for being so supportive to me during this time..

There is nothing like home, home sweet home. The first week of recovery at home is rough on the parent, I think, it was for me anyway. Just be sure to ask the vet all your concerns and see which medications you can add or tweak for Lucy.

Arthritis or soreness or both? My dog after surgery was unable to walk without a sling for at least 4 days and it took her like a month to walk like before. The way they positioned them for surgery, make their joints to be sore and the sudden drop in cortisol really affects them.

I am sooo glad that Lucy is home. You'll be amazed how quickly they bounce back to normal.

THanks everybody:)
Well, last night was kind of odd....I put her to bed and after about 2 hours she started to just pant. Laid down with her and pet her for awhile....then it seemed like she was either hot or in pain or both, so I brought her canine cooler mat in, put it on top of her bed and positioned her on it...that seemed to work for a few minutes...then she started panting again. Helped her up, brought her to the kitchen, and she was voraciously hungry...at 3 am:eek: Ate a whole can of i/d (food she's on now), and half a can of w/d...put her back to bed, and she slept like a rock for the rest of the night:) It's amazing the little things that make me happy now. She ate another 3/4 can of food at 7:30, we went out, and she did her business:D I know...you guys have got to be going...ah, jeez...every little thing now:rolleyes:
But I know you know how it is.
Will post again with the next exciting detail of our lives soon:D

Thanks Lori....
Question for you guys. Pretty soon I'm going to transition Lucy into regular food. She still has to be on just soft for a while because of incision, and was wondering if you guys had any preference for food. She's been on everything from Dogswell to Solid Gold and everything in between when I was trying to get her to eat, but is there one that's fairly high in calories but not so high in fat that will give her diarrhea? She's very prone to that. Dr. B said any food, but I'm sure you guys have some ideas on what I should start with. It's just good to see her with such an appetite again:)

Hi friends....Now that I'm here at home with Lucy I'm going to be posting ALL DAY LONG:)
Forgot to mention that Lucy has a slight corneal ulcer they found yesterday in left eye. They think it's from bumping her head on that side...she's still having left-sided problems. Dr. B put her on Neo-Poly-Bac ointment every 8 hours, and took her off the artificial tears for now. It doesn't seem to bad, so hopefully it will heal soon.

Hope all is well with everybody...

Hi Gina,

Honestly, if Lucy is liking and eating the prescription diets, I'd keep her on them for the time being. Give her mouth time to heal and don't chance having her throw up or get diarrhea....poor girl has been through so much.

As for the panting...well, I've had major oral surgery more than a few times and even though they say the mouth heals faster than any other part of the body, it hurts like heck for several days. If I were a dog, I would have been panting instead crying or moaning so I'm not surprised that Lucy is doing some heavy panting.

Glynda

P.S. I'm glad that your girl is back home with you and that you are home all day and able to keep us posted on the latest. We're all interested in every little thing that is going on with Lucy. She's a celebrity here and if she could write, I'd being asking for her autograph. :D

lucygoo
05-21-2009, 05:22 PM
Hi Glynda...It's funny, she's not panting at all during the day. (And she stopped last night/early morning as soon as she ate.) I'm keeping her on her canine cooler and she seems to like that. I just feel bad that she can't get up when she wants. I hope the Cosequin starts working sooner rather than later.
As far as her being a celebrity...you should see her at the hospital. All she needs is sunglasses and a scarf. I think she misses all the attention. Now she's looking at me as if to say.."All right. This is boring."

Take care everyone,

Hi Gina,

The pituitary is attached to the hypothalmus which is the gland which reguates body temperature, in addition we all go through cycles of warmer and cooler, also Lucy's cortisol is very different now than before the surgery.

I am betting once you get some more healing behind you and settled in on the supplement regimen that things will get much better.

It would probably be a good thing to keep a diary during this early period which you could do by posting here and that would keep us informed also.

Best wishes. Scott

Hi Scott...you're right about the hypothalamus. That's why they think she was running fevers earlier too.
And this place is definitely my diary; with the added bonus of having you guys helping me get through all this.

Take care,

AlisonandMia

Last night's panting could have had to do with the whole cortisone tablet you accidentally gave her too. If the cortisone dose is too high you will get some Cushing's symptoms showing up although how much and how soon is anyone's guess and a pretty individual thing. Too much steroid as a one off doesn't seem to be a big problem - we once had a dog at cc.net that was accidentally OD'd on pred (by a factor of about 10 or so at least) because of a dispensing error and, apart from a bit of panting and peeing, was fine. Gave everyone a terrible fright though and we were googling like mad and found some similar human stories which were even worse....

Her poor old hypothalamus must have had a bit of a rough time of it (to put it mildly:eek:) first it gets squished by the tumor, then it must have been a bit shocked when everything was decompressed and blood could get back in and it was so close to the site of surgery and the swelling etc that came with that. It's great to see that she is hungry, hungry, hungry - is she underweight at the moment from not eating with the tumor? If she is very hungry I wonder if her tummy gets sore because of that at times - I know mine does sometimes. Its just that it was interesting that the panting seemed to improve after eating (is that what happened?)

Alison

05-21-2009, 07:45 PM
Hi Alison...
Yes, the panting stopped immediately after she ate. That makes sense....I thought it was her way of telling me she was hungry:o
And Dr. B also just lowered her cortisone dose. I just wish she could be on prednisone instead of this cortisol acetate.
I also think she got used to being in the hospital and them offering her food every 4 hours, 24 hours a day:eek: Yes, she is still underweight and they want her to gain weight.

Now I've got to get her up, offer her some food and bring her out. Poor thing...she's having such a hard time getting up today:(

Evening Update!.....You guys are going to seriously hate me now:o
Lucy ate a whole can of i/d around 5 p.m., voraciously, I might add...then we went out. She's so funny. She walks really slow for a few steps, stops, and just stands there for a few minutes...then I prompt her and we walk a few more steps....the pattern repeats. I was wondering why she wanted to stay out so long this evening...she refused to go inside...when she finally pooped:eek::D:D

I know...contact the mental health authorities. This has made my evening.

If you insist, the color was sort of cafe au lait-ish...consisitency...perfect. No diarrhea. Now I'M going to check myself in...seriously. I already told Dr. Bruyette last night after my cortisol F-up that they clearly should have operated on my brain right along with Lucy's. He laughed, but did not disagree, as such.

Over the years there have been a lot of funny and embarrassing stories about following your dog in the middles of the night in slippers with flashlight in hand only to be caught by neighbors.

My angel Buddy was always escorted outside to check consistency of poop and even the color and amount of pee, because he was diabetic too often I would put diastix strip under him to check for glucose in the pee.

Wait until you get that look from Lucy that says man will you just let me do my business in peace. Buddy looked at me like that all the time.:o

Morning everyone:)

Lucy started to drink ridiculous amounts of water around 3:30 a.m., and urinating a lot...so I gave her her DDAVP drop in conjunctiva now, around 4:30. She had her last one yesterday at 9 a.m. I e-mailed Dr. B to get further instructions, but thought you guys might be up and have an idea. She's now down to 1/2 cortisone acetate (12.5 mg) twoce a day, and only one DDAVP drop. I figure dosage needs to be tweaked or something. Either that or I'm not getting it in her conjunctiva correctly. Why do these things always happen at 4 in the morning?

Hi all....
Lucy seems to be a little more alert/visual every day, but I'm worried about her arthritis. She still can't get up on her own at all, and can't seem to move by herself when she's lying down. I've been trying to get her up at least every couple hours to get her moving a little. I know Cosequin has worked wonders for her before, but she's never been this bad...so I'm wondering if it's just postop and getting older too. Dr. B said we may have to put her on an NSAID. I know it's frustrating for her too...she can't do what she wants when she wants to do it. So I was thinking today...water therapy:eek: What do you guys think? I have to check with the doctor, of course, but I've seen it on the news and it seems to work wonders with dogs.
Other than that she's eating like a champ and is doing very well, all things considered.

Hope everyone is well,

Are they having you do any kind of physical therapy on Lucy now? Like moving her legs while she is laying down, or anything?

gpgscott
05-22-2009, 04:16 PM
Hi Gina,

I think it is too soon to add much.

The more you add the more complicated this issue.

I think let her rest and assist with the mobility issues.

Moria gets adaquane once monthly after a loading of once weekly for 4 weeks, it is really good for her joint issues, which are mainly hip.

If this was me I think I would be doing pain relieving meds until the healing from the surgery was past and then put a program together to address the arthritis issues. There is much you can do there but in my experience it takes judging the mobility and pain level of the pup and as close as you are to the surgery, you really cannot do that.

Scott

I agree that I shouldn't start anything like that just yet...although the water thing does seem kind of soothing. The only physical therapy is me getting her up and moving her around. Dr. B wants me to do this as much as I can so she doesn't get stiff. As if she isn't already. Too bad she can't just be on prednisone now.

Scott has had some experience with getting-up-and-down problems (hip related I believe) with his Moria and, if I remember correctly, he invested in a sort of harnessy thingy that helped considerably. Maybe something like that would help Lucy and you. It sounds like she is in pain when you are helping her up.

I posted this a while back at K9D for a dog with severe neuropathy...

Something that might help are several excellent products for helping with mobility.

What is affectionately known as "the butt leash" (most of these available at http://www.handicappedpets.biz/www/pet-products/help-pets-walk/60-harnesses-and-slings.html and many other vendors):

https://handicappedpets.com/xcart/images/comboharn/combodogharness.jpg

This is another one we bought but never ended up using, via Drs. Foster and Smith (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+58+8082&pcatid=8082):

http://a1272.g.akamai.net/7/1272/1121/20080731154155/www.drsfostersmith.com/images/Categoryimages/normal/p_25270_17820.jpg

And a leaner model, also courtesy of Drs. Foster and Smith (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+58+19912&pcatid=19912):

http://a1272.g.akamai.net/7/1272/1121/20081209165037/www.drsfostersmith.com/images/Categoryimages/normal/p-35753-47795-dog.jpg

These products have literally saved dogs' lives by making it possible for them to regain their mobility. In many cases, pain relief gave them enough mobility to eventually no longer need these devices.

Another thing that can help if the problem is getting up from a down position and/or slippery floors. Booties with rubber soles helped Moria tremendously too. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=13539

Getting back to work with help with your sanity.:D Lucy will be convalescing for quite a while. I made (at someones suggestion) a version of Natalia's picture 2 by cutting the sides out of a fabric shopping bag and it worked quite well, didn't look as smart as those bought ones but did the same job. Just the fact that Lucy is eating and doing her business is great and only time will help with the mobility. Keep us posted.

Gina,

I have a couple of the devices illustrated.

The first image of two slings, I have the hindquarters one. It works good but does not stay positioned as illustrated, I think if I needed another I would go for the red one from Foster and Smith.

The Ultrapaws in the last illustration are great, they are easy to put on, not expensive and really give some good traction. If you get them make sure you remove them in the evening to let the feet breath.

Hi all...

Just wanted to thank everyone for all your invaluable help, but I won't be posting any more. I just got so creeped out that someone actually called Dr. Bruyette and mentioned me and Lucy. I know it's my fault....I should know that anything you write on the internet can be seen by anyone and everyone, but I'm just not that internet savvy. For me it was a therapeutic, journaling thing, and to get feedback from other people with dogs and this disease, which did really help me, but a lot of the stuff I wrote was just emotional venting, and if he's read my whole thread I wouldn't be surprised if lucy and I got kicked out of the study.

So it's been a pleasure...and thank you all so very, very much:) If you're still interested in Lucy's progress you can send me a private message and we can e-mail.

I always stuck my vet, anything I posted here I asked him personally anyway, and I never disrespected him in any decision when it came to the boys. Yes, it made me question him more, it also made him think about some things more, and he always appreciated that bc it made him see things how I was seeing them. It's hard to explain. But, I don't think you'd be kicked out of the study...this thread isn't about questionning his ability.....rather as Marianne pointed out, it is a testament to your love for Lucy....it is just a human being with a huge big heart trying to sort her way through doing what is best for her beloved dog....who can fault you for that? And yes, it is also a release to people who have walked in, well not the same shoes bc of the pioneer that Lucy is, but to people who understand what it is like to live with Cushing's and the questions we all have, and frustrations, and even celebrations.
I hope you can stay.....Lots of hugs, Beth, Bailey and always Scoobie

Please, please do stay with us and keep posting. I know you feel "exposed" right now but what has just been performed with your Lucy will come up more and more because it is a big breakthrough for all cushpups here. Take heart in that.

continued healing ((((hugs)))) to you both and please keep posting.
Terry

This thread is now closed and has been moved to our archives for safekeeping.

There is another thread on the main messageboard, however, where Gina posts updates about Lucy and where members can still post replies. Here's the link to that thread:
