Are vets in US using pre trilostane & 3 hr post trilostane

Just wondering if vets are allowed to use the pre and post Vetoryl (trilostane) test in the US for monitoring
If yes has your vet mentioned using it?

Hi again, Teri! Usually we like to keep all questions asked by a member consolidated in one single thread. But since this is a more general question as opposed to relating specifically to your Coco, I’m going to let this thread remain free-standing. Actually, I’m curious to read any replies that folks may add, myself. The notion of using resting cortisol levels alone as monitoring tests for trilostane treatment is relatively new. However, Dechra UK (manufacturer of brand name Vetoryl) has developed a formal testing protocol that is now being used in the UK and Europe. Even though there is research that involved testing both before and after giving the morning dose of trilostane, the protocol that Dechra has adopted is simpler still. It involves only taking one resting cortisol sample, one hour prior to giving the morning dose.

As you’re probably aware (and that’s why you’re asking the question ;-), there is far less awareness of this new protocol here in the U.S. As far as we know, Dechra USA is not directly discussing this new protocol with American vets because the protocol has not yet become an FDA-approved revision to the U.S. product information. However, many specialists are aware of the new protocol, and we do know that some vets are using it. One of our staffers, Joan, has been using the protocol with her own Cushpup, and I’m betting she’ll comment here about her experience thus far.

Hi Teri, I have been using the resting cortisol test for the past couple of tests for my boy Gable. I live on Long Island. It is easier on both of us, just the one blood draw and home we go, but you have to give the pill later the day before so that the test is done before his next dose is due. It is less expensive than the ACTH test, too.

My vet had not known about this new testing protocol before I brought it to his attention, but was excited to try it. The sample must be sent to an outside lab, not in-house.
